Talking Horses: The latest news and best bets in our daily horse ...

The latest news and best bets in our daily horse racing blog, plus the tipping competition

Today?s best bets, by Greg Wood

The sheer bulk of the racing programme at this time of the year can be very daunting, for while the evening programme is now restricted to Wolverhampton and Kempton, the daylight meetings are packed with horses looking for another run before the turf season draws to a close. There are eight races at both Yarmouth and Beverley, where the only name that makes a great deal of appeal is Dubawi Dancer (3.45) at the northern venue, but there is a bit more quality to work with at Sandown.

I try never to be put off by a big price when I think that a horse has a squeak ? when put into percentage terms, after all, the difference is often not quite what it appears ? and will take a chance with Heatherbird (5.10) in the 10-furlong handicap. Not for the first time, she pulled much too hard in her last race after a very good second at this track previously, but she is still lightly-raced and could have a better pace today to help her to settle. If she does ? and yes, it?s a fairly big if ? she should not be a 14-1 chance (and 18-1 has been matched on Betfair today). Harry Bentley, who rode her in her excellent Sandown performance, is also back in the saddle today.

Elsewhere on the card, Jiwen (4.40) has a solid chance in the fillies? handicap, while Roy?s Legacy (2.20), who made all to win last time out, has a decent draw in stall four as he tries to repeat the trick and complete a hat-trick in the opener.

Tipping competition, day three

Chandigarh (33-1) was a brilliant selection by chris1623 and xwireman, coming home clear of the pack in Folkestone?s nursery. That pair now have a healthy lead, though zizkov123 (yesterday?s leader) found another winner in Armoise (9-4).

Today, we?d like your tips, please, for these races: 3.45 Beverley, 4.05 Sandown, 4.30 Yarmouth.

This week?s prize is a copy of Gamble, the new Dick Francis novel, written by the late author?s son, Felix. Published this month, the book tells the tale of a jump jockey whose life is plunged into mystery when a friend is shot dead before the Grand National. Fans of Francis may recognise one or two familiar themses there.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of ?1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -4.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.

Good luck!
