Rudy Gay heads to Toronto in Grizzlies' makeover

Rudy Gay is on his way to Toronto in the latest and most dramatic move in the Memphis Grizzlies' money-motivated makeover.

The Grizzlies agreed to trade their star swingman to the Raptors on Wednesday, parting with the leading scorer on a team that has aspirations of making a run in the powerful Western Conference.

The Raptors gave up point guard Jose Calderon and forward Ed Davis in the deal that also included Grizzlies backup center Hamed Haddadi, and Memphis then shipped Calderon to Detroit for Austin Daye and Tayshaun Prince.

"Players like this don't come along that often in terms of their availability," Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo said of Gay. "This was a very unique circumstance. We feel like we took advantage of it."

Memphis general manager Chris Wallace didn't mention finances in a statement issued Wednesday night, but there is no doubt they played a big role in the decision.

"We are excited to add three players who bring with them a tremendous amount of value to our team and have achieved incredible success on the pro, college and Olympic levels," Wallace said in a statement Wednesday night. "In these players, we welcome NBA Champion and Olympic gold medalist Tayshaun Prince, as well as up-and-coming athletic forwards Ed Davis, who won an NCAA title at North Carolina, and Austin Daye."

The moves surprised many around the league, including Calderon and Prince.

"It's been my home for eight years," Calderon said in Atlanta, shortly before leaving the arena. "I've done everything possible for this team. It's tough. The fans have been with me since Day 1. It's tough."

Prince and Daye have both spent their entire careers with Detroit, and Prince was the last link to the proud championship team of 2003-04.

"Trading a player like Tayshaun Prince, who has meant so much to our organization and contributed to our championship success, is never easy," Pistons president Joe Dumars said in a statement. "We want to thank Tayshaun for his professionalism and contributions over the last 10 years. We also appreciate everything that Austin Daye has done for our team both on and off the court over the past three-plus years."

Gay, averaging 17.2 points and 5.9 rebounds, signed a five-year, $82 million maximum contract in July 2010 with Memphis. The 6-foot-8 small forward is due $16.5 million this season with $37 million more over the next two years. That's a big number for new owner Robert Pera, who took over the franchise last November and has quickly started addressing the team's salary situation.

Just over a week ago, the Grizzlies sent valuable reserve Marreese Speights and two other players to Cleveland in a move that cleared $6.4 million in salary and avoided a $4 million luxury tax hit this season. Team officials said that move put the Grizzlies in position not to have to make a move this season.

Memphis coach Lionel Hollins had been lobbying to keep his five starters together the rest of this season, but he apparently lost that fight. It's a significant move for a team that was fourth in the Western Conference and three games behind the third-place Clippers.

"Wow," Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley tweeted.

Trading away Gay also eases a luxury tax hit due next season, while concentrating the team around center Marc Gasol and All-Star forward Zach Randolph. The Grizzlies had their best playoff run in 2011 when they knocked off then-No. 1 seed San Antonio before losing to Oklahoma City in seven games in the Western semifinals ? all with Gay on the bench after needing season-ending shoulder surgery.

"Wow that was 1 crazy trade today," Oklahoma City center Kendrick Perkins tweeted. "Are you serious Rudy Gay is right there under KD, Lebron, Kobe, and Melo. (hashtag)badtrade."

They do run the risk of upsetting the chemistry on a tight-knit group, even if there were some questions of how Gay's scoring fit in with the ball-dominant frontcourt of Gasol and Randolph.

But there may be more deals like this one coming in the new NBA economy.

The collective bargaining agreement negotiated after last year's lockout makes the penalties for exceeding the salary cap far more punitive, and the system begins in earnest next season. Playing in a smaller market, the Grizzlies don't have the extra revenue from lavish television contracts like teams in Los Angeles or New York, which makes it that much more difficult to go over the cap. But even teams such as the Lakers and Bulls will likely have to be more responsible with their spending under the new deal, where repeat offenders are taxed at rates that multiply with each consecutive year they go over the cap.

The first domino fell before the season, when Oklahoma City sent James Harden to Houston instead of signing him to a big-money extension, and more are sure to follow.

All told, the Grizzlies shaved nearly $40 million over the next three years after the two trades.

They'll get a hard-nosed defender in return in Prince, the 32-year-old forward who was drafted by the Pistons in the first round in 2002. He is averaging 11.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game this season.

"Shocked obviously," Prince said after the Pistons played the Pacers. "I didn't find out, obviously, until I got here. I'm shocked, but it's a business and you never know what's going to happen."

Calderon joined the Raptors from Spain in 2005 and has been a fan favorite and trusted veteran on the team. He is averaging 11.1 points and 7.4 assists this season for the Raptors (16-29), who are desperately trying to scratch their way into the playoff picture. Toronto was in 11th place before the games were played Wednesday, 5? games behind Boston for the eight seed.

Calderon and Davis had both been starting for the Raptors, but they do have Kyle Lowry waiting in the wings at point guard and likely see Gay's scoring punch as the key to vaulting back into the discussion in a mediocre conference.

Coach Dwane Casey will have to deal with a bit of a log jam with Gay, DeMar DeRozan, Terrence Ross, Landry Fields and Alan Anderson as wing players with similar skill sets. But getting a player with Gay's natural scoring talent, even at the expense of parting with a valued player like Calderon, proved too enticing to pass up.

"Hopefully this team is back to the playoffs as soon as possible," Calderon said.

Five Problems That Keep Horse Owners Awake at Night | Boss Pet ...

Five Problems That Keep Horse Owners Awake at Night

Do you often find yourself not being able to sleep at night? If you?re like many horse owners, you could be tossing and turning over common, but (mostly) fixable problems, like colic or stall casting. Knowing what to do in these situations should give you some peace of mind. And having an easy supplement to keep both horses and owners calm and healthy makes a difference too.

Let?s take a look at how to treat five sleep-stealing problems:

How Do I Prevent My Horse from Getting Colic?

If the word alone makes you cringe, you are in good company. Colic, as most horse owners know, can happen to any horse at any time, and for a wide variety of reasons. Colic is one of the biggest causes of horse death worldwide, even though the condition can often be remedied by home medical treatment. ?Horses are prone to colic because of the unique way their gastrointestinal organs are structured and operate. While avoiding changes in diet and routines and implementing preventative health programs may help prevent colic, it?s no guarantee. ?To boost your horse?s digestive health, add a bit of omega fish oil to your horse?s feed. The derivatives of the fish oil modulate acid secretion and enhances mucosal blood, all of which ensures a healthy stomach.

Should your horse contract colic, keep a cool head and take immediate action. Here?s what to do:

1. Call your local veterinarian.

2. Move your horse into a small area that is well bedded, allowing for close observation.

3. Remove all food from the area to prevent the horse from eating.

4. If you notice your horse rolling around, try to lightly walk him around to stop him from twisting his bowel. This will also help distract your horse from the pain.

How do I Fend Off Stall Casting?

Many owners are terrified that they?ll wake up one morning and find their horses lying down against a wall, making it impossible for them to get up on their own. While it?s less traumatic than a case of colic, stall casting can still be a scary situation for owners, and potentially dangerous for horses. Horses can injure themselves in a stall casting if their legs and head hit the side of the stall in panic. ?So what should you do? While your first instinct might be to move the horse, you could endanger yourself if your horse panics.

Here?s a recipe that should give you a dose of reassurance:

1. Go find assistance.

2. Before entering the stall, remember to talk to the horse so that he does not spook and injure himself further.

3. Move the front of the horse to the center of the stall by positioning yourself in the middle of his neck and pulling it back towards you. Never use the halter to move the horse; the pulling motion from the head can cause damage to the spine.

4. Once the horse has enough room to get his legs underneath him and stand up, move out of the stall and give him room. Once the horse is standing, calmly check for any injury and remove his halter to check for any signs of internal swelling to the head.

5. Two hours after the incident, go back and check on the wellness of your horse. By this time, any swelling and further injuries should have had time to set in. Also, be sure to evaluate your horse?s joints, since?they?ve?likely gotten stiff from not being able to move for long periods of time.

If you find your horse has stiff joints regularly, give your horse a dose of Omega- 3 fish oil every day. Omega-3 is a natural anti-inflammation agent, and will help improve agility and reduce joint pains.

Is My Horse Comfortable?

Here?s a good rule of thumb to put your angst at ease: If you are too hot, so is your horse. If you are cold, your horse may not be. ?Horses can adapt better to cold weather than hot weather. With their warm winter coats, horses have a natural insulator that also keeps them dry at the skin. In cold temperatures, horse owners tend to keep their horses locked up for most of the day. But, the more time your horse spends outside, the healthier he?ll stay.

Blankets can help keep your horses warm, especially if you keep your horses clipped. Most of the time, one blanket is sufficient, but you can check the temperature by sticking your hand underneath and seeing for yourself. ?Of course, one of the nicest things about horses is their ability to adapt. The more consistent you treat your horse, the more comfortable he will be.

Should I Turn Out My Horse?

Weather is a big factor for determining whether or not to turn out horses. Most horse owners believe that horses need to be turned out daily, so when the bad weather rolls around, owners often worry or are unsure of what to do. There are several factors to keep in mind when deciding to turn out your horse, no matter what the weather may be.

Keep your horse from becoming ?fresh? during bad weather spells by turning out your horse frequently for shorter time periods. If your horse has shelter to get under, let him out as long as it is not lightning. Your horse will get under the shelter if he?s uncomfortable, so you should also take your cues from his behavior.

What if I Forgot Something Important?

Even if?you?ve?figured out how to tackle those key horse-health questions, you may still feel some lingering angst. I bet?you?ve?woken up wondering, ?Did I latch the gate??

Forgetting to latch a gate or fill a water bucket are common mistakes. But fish oil has a solution for that too. You can try the ultra-fresh fish oil for humans. Omega-3 plays a vital role in brains functions, like memory, and helps insure proper growth and development. So, as you pour fish oil onto your horse?s feed, do yourself a favor and take a daily dose of your own fish oil.

Ta-ta to a good night?s rest!

Kansas Legislature muscles through anti-union bills

Staff Kansas City Business Journal

The Kansas Legislature is taking up a pair of bills aimed at limiting the power of unions, The Lawrence Journal-World reports.

HB 2023 would prevents the Kansas National Education Association from using voluntary paycheck donations for political activities, according to the Journal-World. That bill is ready for debate.

A bill introduced Tuesday, HB 2123, would limit the ability of public workers, police and firefighters to bargain for better pay or working conditions. The United Steelworkers of America and Working Kansas Alliance said the bill basically strips public workers of their bargaining rights.

What?s next for Anthony Pettis? Waiting patiently for the lightweight title shot

With his performance against Donald Cerrone on Saturday night, Anthony Pettis made a believer out of many fight fans. One of those who now thinks Pettis belongs in the title shot conversation is UFC president Dana White.

While the next bout for UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson is set with Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez in April, Pettis has set himself up as the obvious next man up.

"I think the Melendez fight is pretty set, but (Pettis is) next. I can't say enough things about the kid tonight. That was incredible," White said in the postfight press conference.

The last time Pettis had a title shot, he had a wrench thrown into the plans. Pettis won the WEC lightweight belt in the promotion's final fight. A title shot was promised to whoever had the belt when the WEC merged with the UFC.

But two weeks after Pettis won the belt, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard faced off for the belt. They fought to a draw and Edgar kept the belt, but Maynard was given an immediate rematch.

Instead of waiting for the title shot then, Pettis fought Clay Guida. He lost a decision, and the title shot was gone. This time, he's not going to let the title shot slip through his hands.

"If it's a guaranteed title shot, then I'm waiting. That was my goal this year, and I'm definitely going to wait and get better," Pettis said.

The way title shots have been going in the UFC, there's no way to know if Pettis is making the right call. However, what Pettis is doing is setting himself up as the go-to guy if the UFC needs him. Melendez has had to postpone fights because of injuries in the past, and you never know what could happen as fighters prepare for their bouts.

Whitney Houston's mom: 'She knew better'

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

The loss of a child is devastating for a parent, and Whitney Houston's mother Cissy is no different. But while she remains in mourning for the loss of her talented daughter last January, Cissy is very tough-minded about the decisions Whitney made that sent her down the path toward her early death from accidental drowning, heart failure and cocaine use.

"Good mothers and good fathers and good families don't always have great children," she told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie Monday, in advance of the publication of her book "Remember Whitney: My Story of Love, Loss, and the Night the Music Stopped."?

"Bad people have good children. ... It's all their responsibility when they get to a certain age to choose their way," she continued. "She was taught, she knew the way."

'Remembering Whitney': The icon's mother pays tribute?

Houston clearly felt -- and still feels -- a lot of love for her late daughter ("she and I were very, very close. She knew I loved her") but in speaking with Guthrie, she didn't want to apportion blame.

"I don't know too much about Bobby Brown," she said when asked about Whitney's ex-husband. "I don't want to talk about him. ... I know he didn't help her. I don't blame him. ... Everybody is responsible for their own actions up to a point. She was raised, she knew better, and whatever took her to that position, I really don't know."

Still, in a later interview with TODAY's Al Roker, Houston went a bit further, saying marrying Brown "wasn't the greatest idea in the world" and that "he did hurt her in a lot of ways. ... She was in love, I guess."

Cissy said she did what she could to try and pull her daughter back from the brink, but suggested that the confusing world of the music business, being called "Whitey" early on and then the marriage match to Brown led to her daughter seeking self-medication.

"She was giving, loving. She -- just didn't like confusion; turned away from that as much as she could," Cissy told Roker, adding that "I really do" believe that's what led to her drug use.

In the end, whatever caused the death of Whitney Houston at age 48, the loss will never be fully repaired for her mother. "I miss her so much I can't even express it," she said, but added that she doesn't necessarily think that her daughter went before her time.

"I trust in God," said Houston. "His ways are not our ways so we have to go with that and there's nothing I can do about it."

Charter schools, fireworks, guns popular subjects for legislation ...

AUGUSTA, Maine ? Bonds, charter schools, fireworks and the state?s weapons laws are likely to be common themes in legislative debate in the coming months as lawmakers wade through more than 1,600 bill submissions.

A legislative office Monday released a list of titles for the numerous pieces of legislation proposed by lawmakers in time for their Jan. 18 bill submission deadline. The specific proposals will emerge in the coming weeks as the Legislature?s Office of the Revisor prepares the official bill text.

Lawmakers in the House and Senate have proposed more than 30 separate bond measures that propose to fund job-creation initiatives, research and development projects, road improvements, a commuter rail, and a variety of projects at the state?s universities, community colleges and Maine Maritime Academy.

The bond measures would also fund a handful of local projects, including an initiative to expand the Portland Fish Exchange and another to develop Lewiston?s Riverfront Island area.

The list of bill titles also shows that lawmakers are interested in revisiting a handful of laws that passed during the past two years by a Republican-controlled Legislature.

Legislators submitted more than 15 measures targeting charter schools, which Maine now allows following a 2011 law passed by the last Legislature and signed by Republican Gov. Paul LePage. The law made Maine the 41st state to allow the independently run public schools; similar bills had failed in previous Legislatures controlled by Democrats.

One measure, proposed by Democratic Sen. Linda Valentino of Saco, would prohibit so-called virtual charter schools, which would allow students to complete all or a majority of their coursework remotely. Three separate bills proposed by Democrats Rep. Victoria Kornfield of Bangor, Senate President Justin Alfond of Portland and Rep. Michael Devin of Newcastle establish moratoriums on the approval of virtual schools.

Democrats have raised concerns about the ties between nonprofit groups proposing to start virtual charter schools in Maine and for-profit companies the schools would rely on to provide curriculum, teaching and management services.

LePage has also stoked the controversy by publicly criticizing the Maine Charter School Commission for not approving applications to start virtual charter schools. Earlier this month, he called on the commission?s seven members to resign after they rejected four of five applications for new charter schools, including two proposals for virtual schools. The commission members said they would not resign in response to the governor?s call.

Lawmakers have also proposed measures that would affect the funding stream for charter schools, including a measure by Rep. Bruce MacDonald, D-Boothbay Harbor, that would eliminate the requirement that local public school funding follow each student who attends a charter school. Under Maine law, charter schools receive funding from the home school districts for each student they enroll.

Meanwhile, LePage is preparing legislation that would remove the 10-school cap on the number of state-approved charter schools.

Fireworks are another popular theme on the list of lawmakers? bill proposals. Legislators in 2011 reversed Maine?s 60-year-old ban on the sale and use of the consumer explosives.

This year, lawmakers are proposing at least a half-dozen measures to establish restrictions on their use, protect farm animals from noisy fireworks and require local permits to set off fireworks. One measure, from Democratic Rep. Michael Lajoie of Lewiston, would completely repeal the law allowing the possession and sale of fireworks.

The state?s weapons laws are another frequent subject of legislation following last month?s deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

One bill, sponsored by Rep. Paul Davis, R-Sangerville, would provide funding to allow Maine to expand its reporting to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. While Maine is required by state and federal law to report the names of people who have been involuntarily committed to psychiatric hospitals ? and, therefore, unable to legally own a gun ? to the national database, it hasn?t had the funding to do so.

Other weapons measures on the list of bill titles would require additional training before someone can obtain a concealed weapons permit, ensure that the names of concealed weapons permit holders are kept confidential and ban guns with high-capacity magazines. A handful of bills would also prohibit the enforcement in Maine of federal restrictions on gun ownership.

(AP) ? Law enforcement leaders who met with President Barack Obama Monday urged him to focus on strengthening gun purchase background checks and mental health systems, but did not unify behind his more controversial gun control efforts.

The message from sheriffs and police chiefs gathered at the White House reflected the political reality in Congress that the assault weapons ban in particular is likely to have a hard time winning broad support. The president appeared to recognize the challenge of getting everything he wants from Congress as well, participants in the meeting said.

"We're very supportive of the assault weapons ban," as police chiefs, said Montgomery County, Md., Police Chief J. Thomas Manger in an interview with The Associated Press. "But I think everybody understands that may be a real tough battle to win. And one of the things that the president did say is that we can't look at it like we have to get all of these things or we haven't won."

Opinions over an assault weapons ban and limits on high capacity magazines ? two measures the president supports ? were divided in the room. While Manger said the police chiefs from the large cities support that kind of gun control, some of the elected sheriffs who were in the meeting may not.

"I think what was made clear was that gun control in itself is not the salvation to this issue," said Sheriff Paul Fitzgerald of Story County, Iowa, one of 13 law enforcement leaders who met with the president, vice president and Cabinet members for more than an hour, seated around a conference table in the Roosevelt Room.

Among the participants included three chiefs that responded to the worst shootings of 2012, including Aurora, Colo., where 12 were killed in July; Oak Creek, Wis., where six died in an assault on a Sikh temple, and Newtown, Conn., scene of the most recent mass tragedy that left 20 first-graders dead.

The White House recognizes that police are a credible and important voice in the debate over guns that has developed following last month's elementary school shooting in Connecticut. Obama opened the meeting before media cameras and declared no group more important to listen to in the debate.

"Hopefully if law enforcement officials who are dealing with this stuff every single day can come to some basic consensus in terms of steps that we need to take, Congress is going to be paying attention to them, and we'll be able to make progress," Obama said.

Obama urged Congress to pass an assault weapons ban, limit high capacity magazines and require universal background checks for would-be gun owners in a brief statement to the reporters. But participants said after the media was escorted from the room, the focus was not on the assault weapons ban.

"He did not ask us if we do or do not support an assault weapons ban," said Hennepin County, Minn., Sheriff Richard Stanek, president of the Major County Sheriffs' Association. "He did not ask us if we do or do not support high capacity magazines."

"I told him very candidly that this isn't just about gun control alone," Stanek said. He said the bigger issue is that the Justice Department's system for background checks is incomplete since many states don't report mental health data or felony convictions. He mentioned how in his home state of Minnesota, a 14-year-old shot and killed his mother with a shot gun, but was later able legally to buy additional handguns and automatic weapons because the background check did not reveal his history. "There's example after example after example like that across the country," Stanek said.

Fitzgerald said the mental health system needs to be better funded because jails across the country are becoming "dumping grounds for the mentally ill."

"I was not the only sheriff that spoke up on that issue," Fitzgerald said. "To me, that is the No. 1 thing if we are going to impact that kind of violence that's happening in America."

All the law enforcement participants interviewed said they appreciated the president's attention to the issue and found the meeting constructive. Manger said the president did a lot more listening than talking and heard about the need to fund more police officers to protect school safety and a proposal to restrict the sale of ammunition on the Internet besides the broad calls for stronger mental health and background check systems.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey, president of the Major Cities Chiefs Association, said he's never been more encouraged about the prospect of gun control legislation of some sort, even if the assault weapons ban his group supports is an uphill battle.

"You're not going to get 100 percent of people to agree on anything as it relates to gun control, and we're no different, but a majority of people in the room recognize that something needs to be done," he said. "This was not just a passing thing as far as the president and vice president are concerned. This is something that they are determined to keep in front of the American people until they get something passed."

While the assault weapons ban was not a major focus of the White House meeting, participants say it was discussed at length at a later meeting with Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who sponsored a ban in 1994 that lasted for a decade and last week introduced a renewal of the ban in Congress.

"I would say her message was not well received overall by the group," Stanek said. "Everyone has an opinion on it one way or another."

German business confidence up more than expected

BERLIN (AP) ? German business confidence has increased more than expected this month as hopes rise that Europe's largest economy will quickly put behind it a weak patch and benefit from an easing in the continent's financial turmoil, a closely watched survey showed Friday.

The Ifo institute's confidence index, a key indicator of where the German economy is headed, rose to 104.2 points in January from 102.4 in December.

The third consecutive increase lifted the index to its highest level since last June and was better than the reading of 103 points economists had predicted. Managers' view of their current situation improved somewhat and the outlook for the next half-year improved significantly.

In particular, Ifo said in a statement, "optimism is returning" in the important manufacturing sector. "The German economy made a promising start to the new year."

The German economy grew a modest 0.7 percent last year, and officials estimate it shrank by as much as 0.5 percent in the fourth quarter compared with the previous three-month period.

But the country's central bank, the Bundesbank, said earlier this week that it is already showing signs of picking up as improving export hopes combine with a healthy, stable labor market to brighten the picture.

"The contraction in the fourth quarter of 2012 seems to be short-lived," with fears of a eurozone breakup receding and prospects improving for the U.S. and China, said Carsten Brzeski, an economist at ING in Brussels.

Timo Klein, an economist at IHS Global Insight in Frankfurt, said that "the dampening impact from the troubled economies in southern Europe remains a restraining factor but will not prevent a strengthening tendency of the German economy."

The latest Ifo reading indicates that, after the fourth-quarter contraction, the economy already has rebounded in the current quarter, Klein said. First-quarter growth would prevent Germany following several other eurozone countries into recession.

Ifo's survey is based on responses from about 7,000 companies in various business sectors. Earlier this week, a separate survey of investor confidence showed a much sharper than expected rise.

Samsung ships 100 million Galaxy S devices worldwide

Android Central

Galaxy S2, S3 shipments stand at 40 million each

Samsung has announced that its Galaxy S line of Android phones has shifted a total of 100 million units “on the supply side” to date. Meanwhile, the manufacturer’s leading Galaxy S3 smartphone has reportedly moved some 40 million units.

Samsung broke the news through a Flickr post, in which it also revealed that the Galaxy S3 is currently selling at a rate of around 190,000 per day.  The S3’s predecessor, the Galaxy S2, also accounts for some 40 million of those units shipped, the company says. (Our last update on Galaxy S3 sales came in early November, when Samsung had moved 30 million units.)

The history of the series stretches back just over two and a half years, to the launch of the original Galaxy S in May 2010. Since then, Samsung has gone on to dominate the Android market, and in many countries its devices account for the majority of smartphone sales.

Desirable specs, broad international availability and aggressive marketing have seen the Galaxy S3 emerge as one of the biggest-selling handsets of the year, going toe-to-toe with Apple’s iPhone 5 in recent months.

As we move further into 2013, all eyes will be on the eventual successor to the Galaxy S3, though at present Samsung remains tight-lipped about any possible Galaxy S4 device.

Obama to gun-control foes: Examine your conscience

President Barack Obama speaks about the debt limit in the East Room of the White House on Jan. 14, 2013. (Carolyn??Bringing the curtain down on his first term with a combative press conference, President Barack Obama vowed on Monday to push "vigorously" for measures to curb deadly gun violence and pressed foes of new restrictions in the aftermath of the Newtown tragedy to "examine their own conscience." Obama also admitted he faced stiff opposition from gun-rights advocates in Congress and vowed executive action when possible.

The president, due to be sworn in on Sunday and make his inaugural address from the Capitol steps a day later, also warned Republicans against refusing to raise the nation's debt limit in order to wring spending cuts from the White House. "We are not a deadbeat nation," Obama said.

And he defended himself from criticisms that his nominees to serve in his second-term Cabinet have mostly been older white men, urging Americans not to "rush to judgment" based on his picks to lead the departments of State, Defense and Treasury and the CIA.

"Until you?ve seen what my overall team looks like, it?s premature to assume that somehow we?re going backwards," he said. "We?re not going backwards."

One month to the day after the elementary school slaughter in Connecticut, the president said he had received recommendations from Vice President Joe Biden's task force for curbing a national epidemic of gun violence. Those proposals are expected to face opposition from gun-rights groups like the NRA and its allies in Congress.

The Biden task force has "presented me now with a list of sensible, common-sense steps that can be taken to make sure that the kinds of violence we saw in Newtown doesn?t happen again," he told reporters. ?I?ll present the details later in the week.?

He added, ?My starting point is not to worry about the politics. My starting point is to focus on what makes sense, what works, what should we be doing to make sure that our children are safe and that we?re reducing the incidence of gun violence. I think we can do that in a sensible way that comports with the Second Amendment.?

But will Congress adopt proposals like renewing the assault weapons ban? ?I don?t know,? Obama acknowledged. Lawmakers opposed to such steps must "examine their own conscience." In some cases, Congress won't act but he will, the president said.

?I?m confident that there are some steps that we can take that don?t require legislation and are within my authority as president," he said. "How we are gathering data, for example, on guns that fall into the hands of criminals and how we track that more effectively.?

Asked about the surge in gun and ammunition sales, Obama blamed "a fear that's been fanned" by opponents of gun control.

?We?ve seen?for some time now?that those who oppose any common-sense gun-control or gun-safety measures have a pretty effective way of ginning up fear on the part of gun owners that somehow the federal government?s about to take all your guns away," he said. "There?s probably an economic element to that?it obviously is good for business."

He added that "responsible gun owners?people who have a gun for protection, for hunting, for sportsmanship?they don?t have anything to worry about."

Obama also warned congressional Republicans that he will not trade spending cuts for their votes to raise the country?s debt ceiling.

Obama called Republican talk of not raising the limit?of, in effect, not paying the country?s bills??irresponsible? and ?absurd.? He said the GOP will ?not collect a ransom in return for not crashing the economy."

?You don?t go out to dinner and then eat all you want and then leave without paying the check?and if you do you?re breaking the law," he said. ?If Congress wants to have a debate about maybe we shouldn?t go out to dinner next time, maybe we should go to a more modest restaurant, that?s fine. That?s a debate that we should have. But you don?t say, 'In order for me to control my appetites, I?m going to not pay.'"

Even as Obama spoke, Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement that "the president and his allies need to get serious about spending, and the debt-limit debate is the perfect time for it."

And Republican House Speaker John Boehner warned that "the consequences of failing to increase the debt ceiling are real, but so, too, are the consequences of allowing our spending problem to go unresolved." He added: "The House will do its job and pass responsible legislation that controls spending, meets our nation?s obligations and keeps the government running."

At issue is the congressionally established debt limit, which the country is set to reach shortly. Without additional borrowing, the government will not be able to pay all of its bills, raising the prospect of a default on national debt payments or Washington being forced to stop issuing Social Security checks, pay to troops overseas and other legally required outlays, according to Obama. Either option would likely send shock waves through the fragile global economy.

Raising the debt limit was mostly a matter of routine in Washington under presidents of both parties for decades. The opposition would make a big show of wringing its hands over the nation?s finances (as a senator in 2006, Obama himself called it ?a sign of leadership failure" and voted against raising it), and the majority would find a way to pass it.

Republicans broke sharply from that script in August 2011, when they demanded spending cuts equal to the amount that the limit would be raised. The ensuing standoff brought the nation to the brink of default and led to the first-ever downgrade of the country?s credit rating?but also to historic spending cuts, signed into law by Obama. Top Republican lawmakers have said publicly that this time they may be willing to partially shut down the government to secure more reductions.

?Our economy is growing and our businesses are creating new jobs, so we are poised for a good year if we make smart decisions and sound investments? and so long as Washington politics ?don?t get in the way,? the president said.

Apple TV adds rare regional service with Watchever in Germany

Apple TV adds rare regional service with Watchover in Germany

Sometimes minor-sounding events presage bigger things to come (and sometimes not), so Cupertino's recent addition of a new subscription service app to Apple TV in Germany, Watchever, made our ears perk up. The service -- which is still rolling out in the country and may not work on all devices, according to its Facebook page -- offers Netflix-like streaming of movies and TV shows in dubbed German or original formats for ?9 ($12) per month. More significantly, it marks one of the first times Apple TV has added programming specific to a single region on its streaming service, perhaps marking a new trend we could see elsewhere, too. Apple currently has paid subscription apps like NBA, MLB and WSJ from which it gets a nice cut, so a regional expansion would make financial sense -- particularly in countries that don't know a pop fly from a pop tune.

DLP unveils Tilt & Roll Pixel chip architecture, promises brighter projectors with better resolution

DLP unveils new Pico chip architecture, promises brighter projectors with better resolution

Pico projectors are slowly getting better and better as the years go by, and DLP's latest chip architecture announced at CES aims to raise the bar once more. The platform, which the company is dubbing Tilt & Roll Pixel, is the same size as the current generation, but it promises that products will be able to offer twice the resolution, 30 percent higher brightness and 50 percent increase in energy efficiency. Given our fondness for products like the Samsung Galaxy Beam, we're pretty excited to see how good movies look on our living room wall. Don't get too anxious, however -- the new platform is currently sampling to manufacturers and products are expected to arrive "as early as the end of the year." We have the press release for your viewing pleasure past the break.

Update: DLP emailed us with an updated press release to confirm the name of the new architecture. We were also informed that chips using WVGA resolution will be slightly smaller, shrinking from 0.3 inches to 0.2.

Republicans Become Weak-Kneed Over Debt Ceiling Fight

The Washington Post:

House Speaker John Boehner spoke at length with the Wall Street Journal?s Stephen Moore about the coming confrontation over the debt ceiling, the sequester, and the spending cuts Republicans will try to achieve. Buried in the interview is a highly newsworthy nugget, in which Boehner implicitly admitted that the debt limit does not give Republicans the leverage they?ve suggested it does.

How To Effectively Market Products Through The Internet | Mike ...

Successful Internet promotion can bring in many new customers when it is done correctly. You can quickly gain new customers. This article contains all of the information and tips you need to get started.

Researching your competition provides you with important information you can use in your internet promotion campaign. It does not matter what your niche is, you will have competition at all times.

TIP! Get frequent feedback. This is important if you want to be successful because your potential customers expectations may not match yours.

An important tip to consider when it comes to Affiliate marketing is to follow the saying that tells you to never put all of your eggs into one basket. Most businesses take a while to take off. It?s an excellent idea to keep plugging away at your day job until the success of your online venture is assured.

The Google PageRank of your website could be boosted by administering a temporary promotional campaign. When you have a great deal, you can even purchase your PageRank. This is like a brick-and-mortar store drawing in customers with an item that will lose them money initially, but drive sales in other departments.

TIP! Great writing goes a long way towards drawing in customers. Adjectives are nice, try to use them as much as you can.

Subscribers are needed in order to generate more revenue. You can set up multiple versions of your website to determine which version attracts more subscribers. Show different versions to different groups. You can determine which ad is more effective based on subscription rates.

The more ways they can pay, the better your business might do. Although it seems fine to just offer the credit card payment option, it is much better to also offer options like bank accounts and systems of online payment, such as Paypal.

Now here?s some advice on affiliate marketing. Use certain strategies to ensure your customers are aware that your site is secure. Add an easy-to-spot link to your privacy policy to the top right corner of every page. Customers are more likely to take part in online purchasing transactions if they feel that their details are protected. Your customers will be pleased that their identities were protected when they bought your product.

It is important to keep track of online sentiment whenever you have an event or promotion running. This allows you to tailor your future strategies more effectively. When you have a online sale or promotion you should track how it goes over with customers. Apply the advice your visitors have in order to make sure they feel like their needs are important.

TIP! To make a great impression for first-time customers, think about offering a $1 sale or other promotion just for new clients. You create a great buzz and promote strong traffic, and it boosts your product?s exposure.

Your URL should be memorable, so that people come back. Try to use your brand or your business name as your site?s name. While customers can Google you, make it simpler by having an address they can easily remember and type into their search bars.

Blogging is great for attracting more traffic to your site. You must post regularly so that there is always new content for visitors to read. Visitors are more likely to revisit your site if they know they will always be reading up-to-date, useful information.

TIP! Offering free courses or eBooks can be a great way to attract new customers and gain customer loyalty. This is an excellent Internet marketing strategy as you can package the course with a related product that will entice your customers to buy.

The most effective marketing strategy is to have quality content on your site. Review your content prior to posting to ensure your customers get the right message. Have other people look at your content. Fresh perspective can really help! Your visitors will read your articles if the grammar is correct and if they are interesting.

The options at your disposal when it comes to running your business and website can be overwhelming. Deduce your choices into one winning strategy. You should select a field with which you are familiar and which brings you enjoyment for your niche website marketing efforts. Having what you want to accomplish written down can assist you in reaching your goals.

TIP! Link your website in each signature section that is available to you. If you post on forums, your website?s URL should be in your signature.

Be certain that the information you provide to customers when you promote your business is appropriate. You need to make your articles high quality and different. You want people who visit your site to learn something about your business and you also want to make sure that you keep the information updated regularly.

You have seen Internet marketing and how it can be a strong way to attract new customers. It can also be used to communicate with your existing customers. It helps interaction between customers and businesses that were impossible before. Remember to use the strategies you?ve read about here to your upmost advantage as you attempt to build a stronghold in your particular niche.

TIP! Always test how effective your email marketing is to see what resonates with customers. One method to try is called A/B testing.

To obtain some additional critical information, consider a look at this total discussion Blogging For Beginners Part 2 because what you may discover will supercharge your business and give you new insights into Internet Marketing.
