Barrs Battle Brain Cancer!: 5/23/2013

I was thinking about my post yesterday...in particular, the part about me "motivating" Melissa. ?I thought how her or someone else might interpret that statement with a negative tone. ?She didn't take it that way, but still...I think everyone who loves her would like to see her 100% back to her former self. ?Motivation is required for almost anyone who faces something like this, but not because she is lazy or lacks interest in fighting for her life. ?I want everyone in the WORLD to know that Melissa Barr is a fighter! ?She has endured more than anyone I have ever witnessed...needles, surgeries, scans, poisons, drugs, infections, ER's, hospitals...you name it, and this woman has endured it without loosing hope or her mind...and I am the one whining to a blog. ?She has a long way to go. ?I, and hopefully many others, will help guide and motivate her back to active living. ?So today, the day after perhaps the greatest update to this blog yet, I want to make it clear to Melissa, her family, my family and anyone out there reading this...

There is a hero among us....my hero...

Melissa Lynn Barr

Boom! ?How is THAT for motivation?

Early-life traffic-related air pollution exposure linked to hyperactivity

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Early-life exposure to traffic-related air pollution was significantly associated with higher hyperactivity scores at age 7, according to new research from the University of Cincinnati (UC) and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

The research is detailed in a study being published Tuesday, May 21, in Environmental Health Perspectives, a peer-reviewed open access journal published by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, an institute within the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The research was conducted by faculty members from the UC College of Medicine's Department of Environmental Health in collaboration with Cincinnati Children's. Nicholas Newman, DO, director of the Pediatric Environmental Health and Lead Clinic at Cincinnati Children's, was the study's first author.

"There is increasing concern about the potential effects of traffic-related air pollution on the developing brain," Newman says. "This impact is not fully understood due to limited epidemiological studies.

"To our knowledge, this is the largest prospective cohort with the longest follow-up investigating early life exposure to traffic-related air pollution and neurobehavioral outcomes at school age." Scientists believe that early life exposures to a variety of toxic substances are important in the development of problems later in life.

Newman and his colleagues collected data on traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) from the Cincinnati Childhood Allergy and Air Pollution Study (CCAAPS), a long-term epidemiological study examining the effects of traffic particulates on childhood respiratory health and allergy development. Funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, CCAAPS is led by Grace LeMasters, PhD, of the environmental health department. Study participants?newborns in the Cincinnati metropolitan area from 2001 through 2003?were chosen based on family history and their residence being either near or far from a major highway or bus route.

Children were followed from infancy to age 7, when parents completed the Behavioral Assessment System for Children, 2nd Edition (BASC-2), assessing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related symptoms including attention problems, aggression, conduct problems and atypical behavior. Of the 762 children initially enrolled in the study, 576 were included in the final analysis at 7 years of age.

Results showed that children who were exposed to the highest third amount of TRAP during the first year of life were more likely to have hyperactivity scores in the "at risk" range when they were 7 years old. The "at risk" range for hyperactivity in children means that they need to be monitored carefully because they are at risk for developing clinically important symptoms.

"Several biological mechanisms could explain the association between hyperactive behaviors and traffic-related air pollution," Newman says, including narrowed blood vessels in the body and toxicity in the brain's frontal cortex.

Newman notes that the higher air pollution exposure was associated with a significant increase in hyperactivity only among those children whose mothers had greater than a high school education. Mothers with higher education may expect higher achievement, he says, affecting the parental report of behavioral concerns.

"The observed association between traffic-related air pollution and hyperactivity may have far-reaching implications for public health," Newman says, noting that studies have shown that approximately 11 percent of the U.S. population lives within 100 meters of a four-lane highway and that 40 percent of children attend school within 400 meters of a major highway.

"Traffic-related air pollution is one of many factors associated with changes in neurodevelopment, but it is one that is potentially preventable."

Dot Earth Blog: A Plan to Bring Sun-Powered Irrigation to Poor Farmers

One of the finest applications of solar photovoltaic panels is in powering drip irrigation systems for farmers in hot, sunny, poor parts of the world. You don?t even need to store the electricity. The pumping is mainly needed when the sun is shining.

To gauge the remarkable benefits of such systems, start with this peer-reviewed study of solar irrigation projects in Africa?s dry zone led by Jennifer Burney of the University of California, San Diego, and Stanford: ?Solar-powered drip irrigation enhances food security in the Sudano?Sahel.?

One of the challenges, as with many solar systems, is cost.

Now, Paul Polak, a veteran developer of simply designed products that can benefit the world?s poor?(particularly farmers), is trying to raise $50,000 using Indiegogo to produce what he and some volunteer engineers say?will be a 2,000-watt solar pumping system that is affordable for farmers who make $3 to $5 a day. (There are three weeks and around $35,000 to go.)

The initial focus is to establish something of a water hub in a village in India. As Polak explains, ?When two or more of these pumps are in the same vicinity it creates a micro-market for excess water, creating opportunity for the poorer farmers.?

There?s much more background on the proposal here and in this video:

I sent some background on the technology to Professor Burney and sent her questions to Polak. Read on for the discussion (I?ve cleaned up some e-mail shorthand):

Jennifer Burney:

This is fantastic to see. Paul Polak and Bob Yoder have been working for a while now on low-cost solar pumping and I?ve heard rumors of different designs / approaches over the years. It?s hard to know exactly what the design is based on the video and description? but I?m looking forward to finding out more?.

Again, not knowing any details, the biggest question mark for me is on well drilling costs and depth/flow limits.

(1) Borewells are really expensive (unless they?re through soft material and can be done by hand). I am very curious to know what they are exploring on that front

(2) Irrigating 1 hectare [just under 2.5 acres] in dry climates requires quite a bit of water, which means reasonably high flow rates, which?implies depth limits. I?d love to know what specifications they are designing for.

Paul Polak:

Jen raised some very good questions!

First of all, Jack Keller, who has written the classic texts on drip and sprinkler irrigation [some of his work is here] and who Jen probably also knows, is also an active participant in the design team.

The breakthrough in affordability is based on a total systems design approach, in which the cost of the photovoltaic electricity generation system is an important component. Many of the affordability breakthroughs are based on other parts of the system- the controller, the inverter, the motor, the pump, the water conveyance from the well to the crop, the water application system, the selection of high value diversified crops to be grown, and optimization of farmer production methods and access to market. For example, we can provide a drip irrigation system that costs $1,400 for one hectare, less than half the cost of conventional systems. Replacing earth channels by lay-flat hose and conventional surface irrigation by low cost drip at least doubles crop/drop efficiency. Fine tuning impellers to the exact vertical lift improves efficiency by as much as 40 percent.

This project is market driven. There are approximately 20 million diesel pumps producing irrigation water just in India now. Most of them are 5 horsepower with vertical lifts in the suction range. We are designing a radically affordable 2 kilowatt solar pumping system capable of drip irrigating one hectare of high value diversified off-season fruits, vegetables and spices at a retail price 80 percent lower than the existing price of $7,000 for an installed 2 kilowatt solar pumping system in India today. To irrigate 1 hectare (2.5 acres), Jack?s calculations assume we need to apply 5mm/day, which we will deliver through a low cost drip irrigation system. Since it is capable of irrigating 1 hectare of land, this system will be attractive for a very large population of farmers, first in India and then in other developing countries.

Since PV is costly, we start by lowering the cost of the PV system through the use of concentrators. The basic idea is that its cheaper to build flat plate mirrors with a simple tracking devices than it is to invest in larger solar panels. With an efficiency of about 70 percent in mirror-reflected light, our pilot tests with miniaturized models indicate we can obtain an output of about seven suns from 10 mirrors on which 10 suns of light fall when the sunlight is concentrated on a solar panel. This means that in full scale models, we should be able to get approximately 2000 watts output from a 300 watt panel on which 10 mirrors concentrate light.

The problem of overheating of the panels is addressed by attaching a simple water based heat exchanger to the back of the panel through which a small portion of the groundwater we are lifting is pumped. We are using flat plate mirrors because they are one-third the cost of parabolic mirrors, and because flat plate mirrors can be obtained just about anywhere comparatively cheaply in rural areas in developing countries.

This is an example of the options that are being considered. In the end each of the system components will be designed or selected to provide the most cost effective solution that optimizes total system performance to create attractive profit generating opportunities for farmers. The systems approach will minimize the energy required to accomplish what a conventional 5 horsepower diesel pump does. So we economize on the use of water by using low cost drip irrigation application systems, and creating breakthroughs in lowering filter friction, pipe friction, and pump energy losses through a system design approach in which each component contributes optimally to the efficiency and affordability of the total system.

Since our initial business strategy is to directly compete in the marketplace with installed 5 horsepower diesel pumpsets, we bypass the problem of drilling costs ? the farmers we will sell to initially already have tubewells that deliver the required amount of water. We also have a good deal of experience in affordable drilling of boreholes when in the future we start marketing to farmers ready to drill new wells. Fortunately in India there is already a lot of experience with low-cost drilling. Even wells with 4-inch casings suitable for engine pumps are being made at low cost. This is in the Himalayan outwash plain that covers much of eastern India. A large percentage of the 20+ million engine pump wells in operation in India were drilled manually and pump from shallow aquifers that are refilled each monsoon.

RolePlayGateway?

The long and short of this players wanted ad is that I need role players who are dedicated to finishing any RP they become a part of. This RP has slowed to a dangerously slow crawl right now because of flaky and uncommitted players who promised me they'd be able to post consistently, but who ultimately lied to me about their ability and their commitment. I need players who will create a strong character and stick with them. I realize the RP's size, as well as the scope of the battle which the characters right now find themselves in, are both quite daunting. However, I need players who will not shy away from the challenges which the RP holds and who will be able to stick with it for as long as possible. As it stands, the players who made that promise to me ended up disappearing after about three weeks in the RP, if that.

So, if you are a strong and dedicated player who enjoys fantasy stories about Dragons and Dragon Riders, then please click the link at the top of the page to visit the RP's main page and see for yourself what you're getting into.

The RP itself takes place primarily on the continent of Da'lThrea. The continent itself is about 9,500 miles from east to west. To give some scale, the planet Earth is about 8,000 miles around at the equator. This continent is longer than the Earth is around by approximately 1,500 miles. Its tallest mountain is the Dragon's Crown which is over 4 miles in height where the Master of Dragon's Crown resides as he watches over the world below, and watches over the few Dragons which remain as they await the arrival of their Chosen who will become Dragon Riders.

Da'lThrea supports a number of varying humanoid species and is a medieval style fantasy RP where the gun has yet to be invented (and no, you will not be the one to invent it). The crossbow is the most complex weapon which exists in the RP, if you don't count the catapult, and the sword of the weapon of choice for almost all who take to the battlefield. However, all manner of weaponry and skill sets to match can be found within the world our characters inhabit. The combat and throwing knife/dagger, the bow and arrow, the sword and shield, bo staff and spear, poison tipped darts and needles, magic of all kinds... It's all here.

There is a very large selection of Dragons with which to choose from to begin your journey as a Dragon Rider. These Dragons range in size from human sized to the size of a small mountain, and are as varied in colors and shapes as they are in size. Some of them use ice attacks, some use fire. Some use telekinetic power, some avoid conflict all together. The Dragons of this RP are mysterious and highly endangered as a species. For several centuries now Dragon Riders have not existed, and the might of their order has been since forgotten to time by all except the Dragons which remain, and those who reside in the mountain cities in and around the Dragon's Crown.

There is also the option to design your own Dragon using any image you can find online as the basis for what it looks like and how it lives. Whether it uses an ice type breath or fire, whether its wings are scaly or feathered, whether it avoids or searches for combat, what color it is, how long its expected life span is... All of this is up to you if you so desire. There is a list of criteria which you must conform to when designing your Dragon, but it's very straightforward and easy to understand.

There are quite a few races which exist in the RP, and they are as follows:

Humans, Elves, Jumentai, Dwarves, Nymphs, Faeries, Merfolk, Avian, Demon, Angel, Necros, Necromancer, Centaur, Orc, Ogre and Dragon Spawn.

Because of the nature of the RP and the lore which I have designed for it, Necros, Necromancers, Centaur, Orcs and Ogres are not playable races. They exist solely as enemies, or in the case of the Centaur, a neutral race which will avoid contact with others if at all possible. There are several differences between my version of these creatures and races than what you may otherwise be familiar with, so I will explain for those who are confused as to why such a race as a Necromancer is considered only to be an enemy worthy feature of the RP.

Necromancers are undead sorcerers who can bring to life the undead to fight for them, and it doesn't matter which kind of undead we're talking about. If it can find the remains of a Dragon, it will lift its bones from beyond the grave if it means a powerful new servant. The Necromancers can live as long as the magic which revived them remains potent and active. If they manage to manipulate the magic which brought them to life with their own, they can live indefinitely unless they are destroyed outright. To this end, they are unplayable. Necros are basically a term used to define those which were brought back from the dead by a Necromancer, and thus they are unplayable. Centaurs cannot ride Dragons, so they're out. Orcs and Ogres are rather foul beasts by nature in this RP, and a proud creature such as a Dragon wouldn't even let one approach, let alone ride it.

Tornadoes tear through central U.S., killing two

Storm clouds approach South Haven, Kansas, May 19, 2013. (Gene Blevins/Reuters)

Less than a week after a string of tornadoes killed six people in north Texas, a massive storm system that tore through the center of the country on Sunday spawned at least a dozen tornadoes, killed two people, injured dozens more and caused extensive damage from Georgia to Minnesota.

According to the Oklahoma state medical examiner, the two victims?Glen Irish, 79, and Billy Hutchinson, 76?were from hard-hit Shawnee. At least 39 other people were injured on Sunday, Oklahoma emergency management director Albert Ashwood said.

James Hoke, a resident of Steelman Estates Mobile Home Park in Shawnee, told the Associated Press his neighborhood "took a dead hit."

"My father-in-law was buried under the house," he said. "We had to pull Sheetrock off of him."

[Slideshow: Tornadoes rip through Plains]

A tornado at least a half-mile wide was spotted near Pink, Okla., outside Oklahoma City, prompting the National Weather Service in Norman to issue an unusually dire warning:

You could be killed if not underground or in a tornado shelter. Complete destruction of neighborhoods, businesses and vehicles will occur. Flying debris will be deadly to people and animals.

"Large tornado west of Pink!" a tweet from the Norman office read. "Take cover RIGHT NOW in Pink! DO NOT WAIT!"

"Overpasses are NOT tornado shelters!" read another. "Do not park under them! You are keeping others from getting to safety!"

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin declared states of emergency in 16 counties. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said hailstones as large as baseballs were seen throughout the region.

According to the National Weather Service, more severe weather is expected in Oklahoma on Monday, "with very large hail, damaging winds and perhaps tornadoes impacting the region."

From the National Weather Service's Facebook page in Norman:

We are very concerned that we could be dealing with dangerous storms?possibly including tornadoes?around school dismissal time today, and certainly during afternoon rush hour. Please stay very alert today and think about how you might need to change your plans this afternoon. Please share this with your family and friends.

Videos of several tornadoes that touched down in Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri were posted to YouTube:

As well as plenty of hail footage:

Arduino Robot launches at Maker Faire, we go hands-on (video)

Arduino Robot launches at Maker Faire, we go handson video

There's a new kid on the Arduino block, and it's called the Arduino Robot. Launched yesterday at Maker Faire Bay Area, it's the company's first product that extends beyond single microcontroller boards. The Roomba-like design, which we first saw in November 2011, is the result of a collaboration with Complubot. It consists of two circular boards, each equipped with Atmel's ubiquitous ATmega32u4 and connected via ribbon cable.

The bottom board is home to four AA batteries (NiMH), a pair of motors and wheels, a power connector and switch plus some infrared sensors. By default it's programmed to drive the motors and manage power. The top board faetures a color LCD, a microSD card slot, an EEPROM, a speaker, a compass, a knob plus some buttons and LEDs. It's programmed to control the display and handle I/O. Everything fits inside a space that's about 10cm high and 19cm in diameter.

Pre-soldered connectors and prototyping areas on each board make it easier to customize the robot platform with additional sensors and electronics. It even comes with eleven step-by-step projects and a helpful GUI right out of the box. The Arduino Robot is now on sale at the Maker Faire for $275 and will be available online in July. Take a look at our gallery below and watch our video interview with Arduino founder Massimo Banzi after the break.

Honeybees trained in Croatia to find land mines

(AP) ? Mirjana Filipovic is still haunted by the land mine blast that killed her boyfriend and blew off her left leg while on a fishing trip nearly a decade ago. It happened in a field that was supposedly de-mined.

Now, unlikely heroes may be coming to the rescue to prevent similar tragedies: sugar-craving honeybees. Croatian researchers are training them to find unexploded mines littering their country and the rest of the Balkans.

When Croatia joins the European Union on July 1, in addition to the beauty of its aquamarine Adriatic sea, deep blue mountain lakes and lush green forests, it will also bring numerous un-cleared minefields to the bloc's territory. About 750 square kilometers (466 square miles) are still suspected to be filled with mines from the Balkan wars in the 1990s.

Nikola Kezic, an expert on the behavior of honeybees, sat quietly together with a group of young researchers on a recent day in a large net tent filled with the buzzing insects on a grass field lined with acacia trees. The professor at Zagreb University outlined the idea for the experiment: Bees have a perfect sense of smell that can quickly detect the scent of the explosives. They are being trained to identify their food with the scent of TNT.

"Our basic conclusion is that the bees can clearly detect this target, and we are very satisfied," said Kezic, who leads a part of a larger multimillion-euro program, called "Tiramisu," sponsored by the EU to detect land mines on the continent.

Several feeding points were set up on the ground around the tent, but only a few have TNT particles in them. The method of training the bees by authenticating the scent of explosives with the food they eat appears to work: bees gather mainly at the pots containing a sugar solution mixed with TNT, and not the ones that have a different smell.

Kezic said the feeding points containing the TNT traces offer "a sugar solution as a reward, so they can find the food in the middle."

"It is not a problem for a bee to learn the smell of an explosive, which it can then search," Kezic said. "You can train a bee, but training their colony of thousands becomes a problem."

Croatian officials estimate that since the beginning of the Balkan wars in 1991, about 2,500 people have died from land mine explosions. During the four-year war, around 90,000 land mines were placed across the entire country, mostly at random and without any plan or existing maps.

Dijana Plestina, the head of the Croatian government's de-mining bureau, said the suspected devices represent a large obstacle for the country's population and industry, including agriculture and tourism. In the nearly two decades since the end of the war, land mines have taken the lives of 316 people, including 66 de-miners, she said.

"While this exists, we are living in a kind of terror, at least for the people who are living in areas suspected to have mines," she said. "And of course, that is unacceptable. We will not be a country in peace until this problem is solved."

In 2004, Filipovic and her boyfriend were on a fishing trip that took them to a river between Croatia and Bosnia.

"As we were returning hand-in-hand, my boyfriend stepped on a mine," the 41-year-old Filipovic said. "It was an awful, deafening explosion ... thousands of shrapnel parts went flying, hundreds ending up in my body. He was found dead several meters away, while I remained in a pool of blood sitting on the ground."

She sued the Croatian government, saying the area wasn't clearly marked as a former minefield.

"At first I thought I was asleep," she recalled. "Then I heard the voice of my father. I opened my eyes, and saw nothing. I thought I lost my eyes."

The government admitted guilt in the case for failing to keep the minefield sign, but the court has yet to determine financial compensation.

It may be a while before the honeybees hit real minefields, Kezic said. First, they will conduct controlled tests, with real mines but which are marked.

Kezic said American researchers have in the past experimented with mine-searching bees, but TNT ? the most common explosive used in the Balkan wars ? wasn't part of their experiment because its smell evaporates quickly, and only small traces remain after time. Rats and dogs are also used to detect explosives worldwide, but unlike bees, they could set off blasts on the minefields because of their weight.

Even after the de-miners have done their job in an area, some land mines are missed and remain in the soil, and they are most often the cause of deadly explosions. Once the experiment with bees proves scientifically reliable, the idea is to use them in the areas that have already been de-mined, where their movement would be followed with heat-seeking cameras, Kezic said.

"We are not saying that we will discover all the mines on a minefield, but the fact is that it should be checked if a minefield is really de-mined," he said. "It has been scientifically proven that there are never zero mines on a de-mined field, and that's where bees could come in."

CANNES, France (AP) ? Little could lessen the fever-pitched excitement for "Hunger Games: Catching Fire," but heavy rain nevertheless dampened the film's lavish Cannes party.

Stars of the "Hunger Games" sequel, Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Sam Clafin, arrived Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival. "Catching Fire," perhaps more than any other film not actually screening at Cannes, is seeking to use the festival's global platform to promote the highly anticipated sequel.

Digital flame billboards have constantly burned by the Majestic Barriere hotel. The cast posed for photographers Saturday. And in the evening, Lionsgate held a lavish soiree beside the beach on the Croisette, complete with flowing liquid chocolate and parading models dressed in the film's ornate costumes.

But a planned stunt at the party to promote the film was scuttled due to the poor weather that has plagued the first five days of the French Riviera festival. Lawrence made an enthusiastic appearance, but later fled, grimacing ? like other guests ? at the cold raindrops.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will be released in late November.

(AP) ? Thieves ripped a safe from the wall of a hotel room near the Cannes Film Festival and made off with around $1 million worth of jewelry, in a brazen late-night burglary just hours after the screening of a film about break-ins at the homes of Hollywood celebrities, French officials said Friday.

The apparently well-planned robbery at the Novotel hotel took place in the room of an employee of Chopard, the Swiss-based watch and jewelry maker and festival sponsor that was hosting a splashy gala event in a far ritzier hotel around the same time, officials said.

Chopard has loaned jewelry to A-list stars who walk on the festival's famed red carpet under rapid-fire flashes of photographers' cameras. Already this year model Carla Delevingne and actress Julianne Moore have walked the carpet in Chopard gems.

"The jewels stolen are not part of the collection of jewels that are worn by actresses during the Cannes film festival," Chopard spokeswoman Raffaella Rossiello told reporters in a brief statement Friday.

Cmdr. Bernard Mascarelli, a judicial police spokesman in the nearby city of Nice, said he didn't know the exact type of jewelry taken, or its exact value. "Numbers have been put forward that we're still trying to verify, but the figure of $1 million ... we're in that range," he said. Jean-Michel Caillau, a state prosecutor in nearby Grasse who is leading the investigation, said early estimates were that the loot could have been worth as much as $1.4 million.

Rossiello countered that, saying: "The value of the pieces stolen is far lower than those in the figures circulating in the media." She did not say why the jewelry was brought to the Novotel during the film festival, or take reporters' questions.

The theft was believed to have taken place sometime between 7 p.m. Thursday and 3 a.m. Friday, said Mascarelli, when the Chopard employee returned to the hotel room and noticed the damage. Mascarelli said he did not know whether the employee had been attending a Chopard gala that was running late into the night at the 5-star Hotel Martinez across town, where the company has a suite during the festival.

News of the robbery sent journalists scurrying to the Novotel, a business hotel about a 15-minute walk from Cannes' seafront promenade. Dozens of police were involved in the investigation, and police vehicles could be seen outside the hotel Friday afternoon. Authorities were going over hotel surveillance cameras and questioning potential witnesses who might have seen any culprits.

"It seems pretty unlikely to us that it was just one person," Mascarelli said. "Apparently this (hotel guest) was someone who was targeted because it wasn't someone who had been seeking attention. ... There must have been either inside complicity, or people who were in contact with this person and knew that the person had jewels," he said.

Melissa Levine, a spokeswoman for Accor, the French hospitality giant behind Novotel, declined comment about the case.

On Thursday night, Chopard hosted a star-studded gala, and the festival screened Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring" ? a deadpan drama about celebrity-obsessed teenagers in Los Angeles who break into the homes of Paris Hilton and other stars. It's based on a true story about high-school students who, after seeing online when certain stars are expected at a premiere or other event, take the opportunity to steal items from their homes.

Chopard manufactures the crystal and gold Palme d'Or trophy awarded each year to the festival's top film. Festival organizers would not disclose the Palme's whereabouts Friday, but said it was kept in a safe place. They had no comment on the robbery.

Lawyers plead for mercy for Arias in death penalty phase

PHOENIX (AP) ? An attorney for Jodi Arias on Thursday told the jury deciding the former waitress's fate to consider factors including her age, troubled upbringing and talent as an artist, and show her mercy for killing her boyfriend five years ago.

The defense and prosecution delivered opening statements to jurors on whether Arias should get a life sentence or be executed as the case's penalty phase opened in a Phoenix courtroom. The same jury convicted Arias of first-degree murder last week.

Defense lawyer Kirk Nurmi said Arias herself will testify as he listed several factors that the jury can consider in deciding to grant mercy, including her lack of criminal history before the killing and even her skills as a talented artist.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez went through each factor and sought to turn the attention to the gruesome killing, asking what her age, background and art skills have to do with what happened the day Travis Alexander was stabbed nearly 30 times.

Other witnesses in the penalty phase of the trial will include Arias' friends and an ex-boyfriend who lived with her for several years in California. Prosecutors will call family members of Alexander in arguing for a death sentence.

Arias' attorneys earlier asked to step down from the case, but a judge denied the request.

Details about the motion were sealed, but legal experts said Arias complicated efforts for her defense when she gave an interview to Fox affiliate KSAZ minutes after her conviction, saying she preferred death over life in prison.

"I believe death is the ultimate freedom, and I'd rather have my freedom as soon as I can get it," Arias said.

During a closed-door meeting with the judge on Tuesday, Nurmi and Jennifer Willmott sought permission to withdraw from the case, according to court minutes released Thursday.

Los Angeles-area criminal defense lawyer Mark Geragos said Arias' attorneys have a conflict of interest with their efforts to keep their client off death row and Arias' assertion that she'd rather die for her crime.

"It's not highly unusual," he said. "There are cases where defendants make decisions that they're better off on death row, but that puts the lawyer in a conflicted position. You've got a duty as a lawyer to bring the conflict of interest to the courts and disclose it."

Added Phoenix criminal defense lawyer Julio Laboy: "It would be something I would do in my major felony cases if I found that a client was actually working against me and not working with her defense."

Arias cannot choose the death penalty. It's up to the jury to determine a sentence.

On Wednesday, the panel took less than three hours to determine that Arias should be eligible for death in the killing of her one-time lover after prosecutors proved the murder was especially cruel.

Arias, 32, acknowledged killing Alexander at his suburban Phoenix home after a day of sex. She initially denied any involvement then later blamed the attack on masked intruders. Two years after her arrest, she settled on self-defense.

The victim suffered nearly 30 knife wounds in what prosecutors described as an attack fueled by jealous rage after Alexander wanted to end his affair with Arias and prepared to take a trip to Mexico with another woman.

Electric and magnetic characteristics of a material which could be used in spintronics: Promising doped zirconia

May 17, 2013 ? Materials belonging to the family of dilute magnetic oxides (DMOs) -- an oxide-based variant of the dilute magnetic semiconductors -- are good candidates for spintronics applications. This is the object of study for Davide Sangalli of the Microelectronics and Microsystems Institute (IMM) at the National Research Council (CNR), in Agrate Brianza, Italy, and colleagues.

They recently explored the effect of iron (Fe) doping on thin films of a material called zirconia (ZrO2 oxide). For the first time, the authors bridged the gap between the theoretical predictions and the experimental measurements of this material, in a paper about to be published in The European Physical Journal B.

Spintronics exploit an intrinsic property of the electrons found in semi-conductors called spin, akin to the electrons' degree of freedom. This determines the magnetic characteristics, known as magnetic moment, of the material under study. The challenge is to create such material with the highest possible temperature, as this will ensure that its magnetic properties can be used in room-temperature applications.

To study iron-doped zirconia, they examined its magnetic properties and its electronic structure from both a theoretical and experimental perspective. They then compared theory and experiments to find the most stable configuration of the material. Theoretical work included first-principles simulations. In parallel, their experimental work relied on many different well-established analytical techniques, including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and alternating gradient force magnetometer measurements.

Sangalli and colleagues therefore gained a better understanding of doped zirconia, which features oxygen vacancies, playing a crucial role in providing its unique electronic and magnetic characteristics. They have also predicted theoretically how the deviation from the standard structure influences this material's properties. They are currently investigating, experimentally, how the magnetism evolves with changing concentrations of iron and oxygen vacancies to confirm theoretical predictions.

Coppola's 'Bling Ring' at home at decadent Cannes

CANNES, France (AP) ? Sofia Coppola was just 8 years old when she first came to the Cannes Film Festival. Her father, Francis Ford Coppola, was there to premiere a work-in-progress cut of a film he had spent years wrestling with: "Apocalypse Now."

"I have nice memories of Cannes," Coppola said in an interview Thursday on the roof of the Palais, the festival center. "I remember coming here as a kid and then my first movie, 'Virgin Suicides,' had our first screening ever here. I feel like my career started here."

Growing up in such surroundings, one would think, would have heavily informed Coppola's latest film, "The Bling Ring," a deadpan drama about celebrity-obsessed teenagers in Los Angeles who break into the homes of Paris Hilton and other stars. But Coppola says the movie world she grew up in isn't the same as today's star-crazed culture.

"I definitely noticed that people would act different around my dad. It was just part of my growing up," Coppola says. "This world feels unfamiliar to me, this kind of reality-star, tabloid culture."

"The Bling Ring," which opened Cannes' Un Certain Regard section Thursday, is Coppola's third film in a row that deals heavily with the famous. Following her "Marie Antoinette" (her modern-styled take on the French royal) was 2010's "Somewhere," a minimalist drama about a renowned actor and his 11-year-old daughter.

"The Bling Ring" is based on a true story, recounted in a Vanity Fair article, about high-schoolers who, after seeing online when certain stars are expected at a premiere or other event, take the opportunity to steal designer bags, shoes and clothes from their homes, lingering to pretend to live in celebrity opulence.

There's wry irony in premiering such a film at Cannes, the decadent French Riviera resort town of high-end boutiques and luxury hotels.

"It seems like the perfect setting for 'The Bling Ring' when you see people walking around in their heels," says Coppola, who favors a less flashy style. "It's a glamorous place, so it feels appropriate."

Coppola cast mainly newcomers in the lead roles (Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Julien), with the notable exception of "Harry Potter" star Emma Watson, who assumes a thick Valley Girl accent for her character. Watson praised Coppola for her easy calm; Chang noted her gentle openness with actors.

"The Bling Ring," which will be released in the U.S. on June 14, has already drawn comparisons to the recent, day-glo debauchery of Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers." The differences between the two films are many, but both feature the thrill of young, attractive girls breaking bad for the sake of glorious superficiality. (The movies also share a new distributor, A24 Films.)

Though Coppola hasn't seen "Spring Breakers," she says, "I can understand that there's this sort of trash culture aspect that's in the air."

And if there's an epicenter of that culture, it may be Paris Hilton's shoe closet. Coppola shot in Hilton's mansion where the teens rummage through her footwear and lounge in her nightclub room. (The hotel heiress appears fleetingly in the film.)

Like "Somewhere," ''Bling Ring" paints a light, hazy portrait of Los Angeles.

"I wasn't trying to do a story about L.A. I just came across this article, and you couldn't set it somewhere else," says Coppola, who lived in L.A. in her 20s but now resides in New York with her husband, Thomas Mars of the band Phoenix, and their two daughters.

"There's something exotic about it, and it's not like anywhere else. To me, it's the center of this aspect our culture."

?Angry? Obama says acting IRS chief fired over conservative targeting

President Barack Obama arrives at the East Room of the White House, May 15, 2013, to deliver remarks on the IRS??Bluntly declaring "I am angry" about the IRS scandal, President Barack Obama said late Wednesday that Treasury Secretary Jack Lew had forced out Steven Miller, the acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service. Speaking in the East Room of the White House, Obama called Miller's ouster "the first step" to prevent similar misconduct in the future and vowed to "do everything in my power" to make sure it never happens again.

Obama said he had reviewed the Treasury Department Inspector General's report that details how the IRS targeted conservative groups for special scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status.

"The misconduct that it uncovered is inexcusable. It's inexcusable, and Americans are right to be angry about it and I am angry about it," the president said in a brief prepared statement. "I will not tolerate this kind of behavior in any agency?but especially in the IRS, given the power that it has and the reach that it has into all of our lives."

Obama said the "responsible parties" will be held accountable. Lew "took the first step by requesting?and accepting?the resignation of the acting commissioner of the IRS because given the controversy surrounding this audit, it's important to institute new leadership that can help restore confidence going forward," Obama added.

The president's statement from the East Room of the White House came a little more than an hour after a meeting with senior Treasury Department officials to discuss the controversy.

Obama said he had directed the agency to implement recommendations from the inspector general?the Treasury's internal watchdog?to ensure no repeat of the "outrageous" misconduct. "The good news is it?s fixable," he said.

Looking to Capitol Hill, where lawmakers of both parties have denounced the IRS' behavior, Obama promised: "We will work with Congress as it performs its oversight role, and our administration has to make sure that we are working hand-in-hand with Congress to get this thing fixed."

Lawmakers, in turn, should "treat that authority with the responsibility it deserves and in a way that doesn?t smack of politics or partisan agendas," Obama said. He said Washington must "make sure that the laws are clear" and suggested that "too much ambiguity" may have played a role.

?I?ll do everything in my power to make sure nothing like this happens again?by holding the responsible parties accountable, by putting in place new checks and new safeguards, and, going forward, by making sure that the law is applied as it should be: In a fair and impartial way," Obama said.

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell expressed skepticism.

?More than two years after the problem began, and a year after the IRS told us there was no problem, the President is beginning to take action," the Kentucky lawmaker said. "If the president is as concerned about this issue as he claims, he?ll work openly and transparently with Congress to get to the bottom of the scandal?no stonewalling, no half-answers, no withholding of witnesses."

Congress is "determined to get answers, and to ensure that this type of intimidation never happens again at the IRS or any other agency," McConnell said.

Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont was blunter, tweeting:

The President is right to dismiss the #IRS chief, and cleaning house may take more firings.

? Sen. Patrick Leahy (@SenatorLeahy) May 15, 2013

On Wednesday, Attorney General Eric Holder promised angry lawmakers that the Justice Department will undertake a national investigation into the IRS wrongdoing.

"We will take a dispassionate view of this," said Holder, who faced tough questioning from the House Judiciary Committee. "This will not be about parties ... anyone who has broken the law will be held accountable."

Holder said he had launched an investigation last Friday into why the IRS subjected conservative groups to more review when they applied for tax-exempt status. The IRS inspector general's report said that a group of low-level staffers in an Ohio office were responsible, and a top IRS official has apologized on their behalf.

But Holder promised that the investigation will look well beyond Ohio, and suggested that civil rights laws could have been violated.

Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va., asked Holder at the hearing whether an "apology" from the IRS protected them from criminal prosecution. Holder answered, "No."

The Obama administration is under fire over the IRS, the president's handling of the Sept. 11, 2012, terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, and the Justice Department's secret collection of telephone records of Associated Press reporters and editors.

Republicans have been hammering Obama on all three matters. While Democrats have largely defended him?and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?on Benghazi, they have joined their GOP colleagues in denouncing the IRS and in expressing deep concerns about the AP phone records.

On Monday, Obama dismissed Republican charges of a cover-up in the Benghazi situation as a "sideshow" lacking any merit. He has yet to comment directly on the AP issue.

Physical activity is good for the mind as well as the body

This year for Mental Health Awareness Week, the Mental Health Foundation are focusing on the positive effects exercise has on our overall wellbeing. Many of us wish we lived a healthier lifestyle, but putting it into practice can seem easier said than done.

A recent press release from the Mental Health Foundation claims that people would rather do boring housework than work out, and 28% of us exercise less than once a month.

Our Wellbeing guide outlines not just the physical benefits of exercise but the emotional and mental ones too. People who have good mental health are likely to feel more in control of their lives, and their debt. Is there a way to sneak exercise into our busy lives?

The deadly gym membership

According to StatisticBrain, 67% of people with a gym membership will never use it. When I?m working with clients on debt management plans a gym membership will often be a large expense on their budget.

These days joining the gym is often assumed to be the only way of keeping yourself in shape, but there are alternatives;

Walk to work?

I am not a fitness guru by any means but this is one that I have managed to embrace wholeheartedly (except when it?s raining).

It began about five years ago, when I had a different job and spent a large part of my day on buses. I also had a gym membership which was far from cheap, especially considering I made it there twice a week at most.

The obvious solution was to give notice at the gym and start walking to work. All my colleagues thought I was mad, but I saved money, got fitter, lost weight and felt pretty great about myself. My walk is slightly shorter now ? about two miles ? but it still sets me up for the day and I miss it when it rains.

Check out walkit to find your quickest route to and from work.

I want to ride my bicycle

Another alternative to the daily commute, and a lot more fun. If you don?t own a bike and don?t have a lot of money to invest, try looking for a refurbished one at somewhere like cycle-recycle. I bought a bike for ?25 from a bike recycling scheme and although it?s very 80s and pretty heavy, it gets me from A to B.

Encourage your workplace to enter into the Cycle to Work scheme. Co-operatives such as Edinburgh bicycle co-operative are just one organisation that works with companies to provide this.

Run for it

It turns out you don?t need a treadmill to do this. All you need is a pair of trainers and somewhere to run. The scenery even changes as you go along!

If, like me, you?re thoroughly daunted by running you could try the NHS Couch to 5k plan. It?s a free series of podcasts where a friendly lady called Laura guides your running routine. It starts off at an easy pace and increases in difficulty as the weeks progress.

Fitness via DVD bargain bin

There seems to be one of these for everything, from zumba to yoga to aerobics, endorsed by a range of D-list celebrities. The disadvantage of this method is that they can get a little repetitive after a while, but it does mean you can probably find a good selection in your local charity shop.

Don?t forget, you can always find free dance and yoga instruction videos on YouTube!

Free gym equipment and bargains

Become a member of your local Freecycle or Freegle group and you?ll probably find a few choice bits and pieces available such as exercise bikes, weights and the like.

If it has to be a gym full of sweaty machines, then you?re best off with a cheap, non-contract membership that you can end whenever you like. Pure Gym and The Gym both offer these for under ?20 a month. It?s also worth a look at your local council facilities; some of them offer very competitive rates.

Check out our keeping fit on a budget blogpost by Sally Crosland for more handy tips!

Let?s get physical

Fitness is so important not just for our bodies but also for our minds. Taking part in regular?physical activity increases your self-esteem and can also reduce stress and anxiety. According to the Mental Health Foundation, there?s an approximately 20?30% lower risk of depression and dementia in adults who are physically active.

For more information on what you can do to step up your fitness, download the Mental Health Foundation?s Let?s Get Physical Report.

StepChange Debt Charity and the Mental Health Foundation are working together to raise awareness of the mental health problems affecting thousands across the UK. For more information visit our Debt in Mind page.?
