Arlo White and the rest of the NBC Sports Network crew are at BC Place for tonight?s big Cascadia Cup showdown, as Seattle visits Vancouver.?(9 p.m. ET)

Recently remodeled BC Place is one of 14 facilities built or remodeled specifically for Major League Soccer. Nothing has driven MLS growth more than the ongoing facility initiative. So we asked White three quick questions about MLS stadia.

There really are some terrific grounds now for MLS watching. Which are your personal favorites?

I worked in Seattle for two years and will forever have a soft spot for the mind- blowing experience that is CenturyLink Field on game-day. But if that is the equivalent to baseball of the ?new Yankee Stadium,? then down I-5 is Jeld-Wen Field, which would be the ?Fenway Park,? with a wonderful, raucous, historic element to it on match day.

I would go with the new soccer specific stadiums, though. I think Houston have done a tremendous job downtown. Kansas City ? which I somehow haven?t been to yet, which is a shame ? is of course a tremendous stadium.

But for me, I?ve always loved Red Bull Arena. When I toyed with the idea of coming over to work in Major League Soccer a few things tipped the balance. One of those elements was the construction of Red Bull Arena. I thought, nobody is going to spend $250 million on a stadium if they don?t really mean it, and if they aren?t serious about soccer being a success in New York, in New Jersey, and the United States.

It?s the prototype MLS arena for me. It?s 25,000, it is done to the highest specifications. And when it is full it creates terrific atmosphere. They just need to fill it more regularly. For me, that is the flagship soccer specific stadium in Major League Soccer.

Our stadiums here are modeled on European grounds. But we do stadiums pretty well here, too. Is there anything at all that European grounds could learn from the newly developed North American soccer facilities?

It has been huge era, a decade or maybe 15 years, of building new stadiums and modernizing the arenas in Europe leagues. I can speak more of the English leagues than anywhere else and there are some massively impressive new stadiums. Most of them are fairly identical, but they do the job.

The MLS stadiums, I?d like to see a little more personality maybe, but I know there are economic reasons a lot of them look fairly similar.

In terms of Europe and learning things from MLS, I think in MLS the have built the stadiums they require, but they certainly do the job. I wouldn?t say they are better or worse than anything in Europe.

A pair of prominent markets on the East Coast, D.C. United and New England, are in dire need of new grounds. Is there any reason to believe new facilities for New England and D.C. United cannot breathe fresh life into those organizations, a la Sporting Kansas City and the amazing franchise revitalization we?ve seen there?

I have absolutely no doubt that it would. I went to CommunityAmerica Ballpark [outside Kansas City, where the club played for three years] a couple of times and announced games out of a metal container. It was an interesting experience! ? There was enthusiasm there, but there wasn?t the passion or the raucous atmosphere we see we see at Livestrong, which is such a terrific stadium.

D.C. have passionate fans and I see it at RFK stadium every time I go there. I just don?t see it in the huge numbers that were once there.

There is a huge passion for soccer around the Boston area and in New England. But they have to go out to Gillette Stadium, which is painful to get to. And the crowds aren?t anywhere near as big as they should be.

So if those two clubs, with those two passionate fan bases with their potential fan bases, get gleaming new homes which are accessible to the majority to the fans, I think you are going to see a tremendous upturn in atmosphere and interest in soccer in those markets.

Powertrain deals expand Renault-Nissan-Daimler pact

PARIS (Reuters) - Renault and affiliate Nissan unveiled plans to share gearboxes with Mercedes and develop compact engines with its parent Daimler , expanding their partnership with the German luxury automaker.

Daimler will develop a new range of fuel-efficient, 1.3-litre petrol engines with Renault and license its automatic transmissions to Nissan and its upscale Infiniti brand, under agreements announced on Friday at the Paris auto show.

The joint programs will save production and development costs for all three companies, with output expected to run to more than 3 million of the four-cylinder engines, Renault-Nissan alliance chief Carlos Ghosn and Daimler counterpart Dieter Zetsche told reporters.

"This cooperation is about scale and sharing, and it's working very well," Ghosn told a news conference at the show.

The new automatic transmissions will be manufactured in Mexico by Jatco for Renault-Nissan, Ghosn said.

Under their 2010 partnership agreement, Renault-Nissan and Daimler have already joined forces to build small cars such as the Renault Twingo, Mercedes A-Class and Smart, as well as engines - with production at Nissan's Tennessee factory announced earlier this year.

Mercedes is also sharing its front-wheel-drive car platform for a new Infiniti model due to start production in 2015.

This year sees the first jointly developed vehicles taking to the road, including the A-Class with Renault engines and Mercedes Citan van - built at the French automaker's plant in Maubeuge alongside its own Kangoo model.

The two chief executives declined to go into detail on cost savings achieved by their partnership so far or those still to come.

"It's definitely fair to say on either side the benefits are a billion number, not a million number," Zetsche said.

Renault holds a 43.4 percent stake in alliance partner Nissan, which in turn owns 15 percent of the French automaker, with Ghosn heading both companies.

Renault-Nissan and Daimler also hold small stakes in each other's capital, purchased in 2010 to cement the three-way partnership.

RIM is holding its yearly developers conference this week, playing host to over a thousand developers still dedicated to the BlackBerry platform. The company detailed several novel features to BlackBerry 10 scheduled for release in early 2013. And yes, there was this bad music video, too. Anyway, a fellow TC editor strangely posted a RIM employee's OOO reply earlier tonight. He called it both epic and sad. He stated it was delusional, yet awesome. He then laid into this random employee for having a positive outlook and faith in his struggling employer. This RIM employee deserves better. Much better. He (or she) deserves a pat on the back for sticking to the mission in spite of all the mud that's been flung. Sure, the OOO reply was a bit over the top, but that's what it's going to take to save RIM. And RIM is worth saving.

Herndon Family Found Dead Was Friendly, Neighbors Say ...

Herndon, VA ? Herndon's Point Rider Lane neighborhood is reeling Tuesday after learning a family of four was found dead inside a home there this morning.

Police were called out to the home in the 13300 block of Point Rider Lane at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to do a welfare check on the family after a coworker of one of the adults notified police they hadn?t been to work Monday or Tuesday, police said.

Police breached the home at about noon and found the bodies of two adults and two Fairfax County school aged-children, Fairfax County Police Spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said.

Caldwell said they have not released a cause of death and next of kin has not yet been notified. She said the preliminary investigation has found no threat to the community.

Neighbors say the family that lived in the home was friendly and helpful, sometimes helping clear snow after a storm and always waving.

Ed Swanson Jr., a neighbor of six years, said he?s shocked something like this happened in the community. He said the husband was a "good guy" who was helpful and the neighborhood "has been awesome."

Another neighbor, Sherry Webster, said her son had been friends with the family?s two boys when they were younger. She said it will be difficult to tell her son what happened.

Webster said the parents were outgoing, neighborly, and a cute couple.

?She was full of energy,? she said of the wife.?

Romney: Teacher Contributions to Politicians Should Be Limited

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney said on Tuesday that Democratic politicians have a conflict of interest in dealing with teachers' unions because the unions contribute so heavily to their campaigns. He suggested that money should somehow be diverted or cut off, although he did not offer details.

Speaking in New York City at Education Nation, a forum sponsored by NBC, Romney told interviewer Brian Williams that he is not necessarily against a right to strike. ?I don?t know that I would prevent teachers from being able to strike,? he said, adding later that ?allowing teachers to strike on matters such as compensation I think is a right that exists in this country.?

The bigger problem, Romney said, is that ?the person sitting across the table from them should not have received the largest campaign contribution from the teachers' union themselves.... [It?s] an extraordinary conflict of interest and something that should be addressed.?

He later added that ?we simply can?t have? elected officials who have received large contributions from teachers sitting across from them at the bargaining table ?supposedly? to represent the interests of children. ?I think it?s a mistake,? Romney said. ?I think we have to get the money out of the teachers' unions going into campaigns. It?s the wrong way for us to go. We?ve got to separate that.?

The problem is broader than teachers' unions, Romney said, but they are the issue when it comes to Democrats. ?I don?t mean to be terribly partisan, but I kind of am,? he said to laughter.

Romney was dismissive when a New York City school board member at the forum, also a parent, said city parents support the union to protect their kids 3-to-1 over the mayor and chancellor. ?They believe actually that the unions are fighting for our kids,? the man said. ?This is not?coming from me, this is coming from a poll of parents.?

?I don?t believe it for a minute,? Romney said. ?I know something about polls and I know you can ask questions to get any answer you want.?

Romney attended an expensive private school, Cranbrook, when he was growing up in Michigan, and Williams asked him whether all kids deserve that kind of education. ?That?s not going to be available for the entire nation,? Romney said. But he said that ?a dollar number? doesn?t always equate to an effective teacher and ?I know that there are teachers in the public system who are every bit as good as those in the private system.?

It?s most important to focus on attracting and promoting good teachers, measuring student performance, and giving students incentives to do well, Romney said. ?We have proven that sending a lot of money to failed schools to pay the same teachers to do the same things will not make any difference,? he said.

Australian church admits to 600 child abuse cases

Moscow, Sep 23 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Australia's Roman Catholic Church has confirmed 620 children have been sexually abused by its priests since the 1930s in the state of Victoria. Campaigners, however, put the figure at 10,000 between 1960s to the 1980s only.

The Catholic Church of Victoria's admission came in a submission to a state parliamentary inquiry into the handling of child abuse cases by religious and other organisations after suicides of dozens of people abused by clergy, ABC reported Sunday.

Most of the abuse cases took place between the 1960s and the 1980s, with another 45 cases being investigated. Campaigners, however, say the real figure could be up to 10,000 victims in Victoria alone.

In the submission, the Catholic Church said it committed to fully cooperate with the inquiry and to not "disguising, diminishing or avoiding the actions of those who have betrayed a sacred trust".

Father Shane Mackinlay of the Ballarat Diocese admitted the church had its "head in the sand" for a long time.

He added that there had been a history of resistance to face the truth about "shocking abuse" that happened within the church, both by the clergy and in the wider community.

Child abuse by Roman Catholic priests has been a top issue in Australia in recent years.

During his visit to Australia in July 2008, Pope Benedict XVI made a public apology for the abuse.

The Atlantic Launches Mobile-First Business ... - Deondesigns.ca

Quartz, a digital-only business publication from The Atlantic Media Company, went live Monday afternoon. It joins the conglomerate?s growing list of digital assets, a portfolio that includes TheAtlantic.com, TheAtlanticCities.com, TheAtlanticWire.com and NationalJournal.com, among others.

The Atlantic has poured more resources into Quartz?s launch than it has for its last two digital creations, The Atlantic Wire and The Atlantic Cities. Instead of an initial staff of two, as was the case with Cities, Quartz has a launch staff of about 20.

The publication has already made some big-name hires, including former Wall Street Journal online managing editor Kevin Delaney, now Quartz?s editor-in-chief; Gideon Lichfield, previously deputy digital editor and media editor at The Economist, who has been named global news editor; and senior editor Zach Seward, former social media editor at The Wall Street Journal. (A fourth, former VP of sales and marketing for Gawker Media Chris Batty, has already resigned his role as publisher.)

Quartz has billed itself as ?mobile-first? ? it has an appy interface that is designed to deliver content for consumption largely via tablets, smartphones and the web, competing against more established entities like The Economist, Bloomberg Businessweek and The Financial Times. ?The reason is very simple: the readership on those devices is enormous and growing, especially among our target audience,? Delaney said in an earlier interview with Mashable. ?We will have a desktop website, but we?re very deliberately focused on how to best deliver global business news to global business leaders on mobile and tablet devices.?

Bucking the current paywall trend, Quartz will be available for free on all platforms. It is not releasing native apps for Apple?s or Google?s app stores at launch; mobile users will have to find the site using their mobile web browsers. Journalists will pursue ?obsessions,? like China?s consumer market and mobile payments, rather than beats.

Another interesting differentiator: Quartz has sponsors rather than advertisers. At present, it has four ? Boeing, Cadillac, Chevron and Credit Suisse ? who will be the sole sponsors until the end of the year, according to The New York Times. Instead of running banner ads (Update: There are banner ads), sponsored content will be baked into editorial products, similar to what Facebook and Twitter are doing with their own ad products.

According to The Times, 65% of The Atlantic Co.?s advertising revenue now comes from digital, up from 51% in October 2011.

Boil Hazelnuts in Water with Baking Soda to Easily Remove Skins [Video]

If you're making Nutella or other recipes that require toasted and peeled hazelnuts it can be a pain to remove the papery skins. To make the skins easier to remove boil the hazelnuts in water with three tablespoons of baking soda.

Culinary weblog My Baking Addiction found this tip from an old clip of Julia Child's cooking show with guest Alice Medrich. After boiling the hazelnuts in the water for three minutes the water will become black. Drain the hazelnuts and rinse with cold water which should make the skins slip off easily.

The conventional method of removing hazelnut skins is to roast them for 15 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit and then rub the skins off with a dampened kitchen towel. The author at My Baking Addiction tried both methods and the boiling technique ended up making the skins much easier to remove.

NFL fines Eagles' Jackson, Jenkins, three Ravens

The NFL weighed in on the illegal extracurricular activity during the Eagles win over the Ravens last week.

The league fined Cullen Jenkins of the Eagles and Marshal Yanda of the Ravens $7,875 each for unnecessary roughness for striking each other after the whistle and away from Vonta Leach's five-yard scoring run in the first quarter.

The NFL billed Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson $10,000 for unnecessary roughness for the punch he threw at Ravens cornerback Cary Williams, fined $10,000 for unnecessary roughness for grabbing Jackson's facemask.

Also fined was Ravens running back Ray Rice, who owes $7,875 for unnecessary roughness for a late hit on Eagles cornerback Brandon Boykin. That came after DeMeco Ryans picked off Joe Flacco in the third quarter.

Hiring Factors in the Security Business

Hiring in the security industry has experienced a downward trend for the past ten years, according to Jerry Brennan, who writes his article in SecurityInfoWatch.com. ? ?Brennan notes unique challenges for anyone seeking a career in the security industry. ?I must admit that this surprised me a little since with all the craziness out in the world you would think the security industry would be experiencing a robust hiring period. ?But no, and since Brennan has been around ?in that sector for quite some time, I take his appraisal seriously.

Brennan writes in his article??There is a three-pronged situation that has slowed hiring in the United States. The recession is the most visible and obvious first factor. Because corporate security programs are frequently built as non-revenue-enhancing service functions, they fall within the category of business units that are generally hit first when budgets and staffs are reduced or frozen. The second prong in the slowdown is retirements. When the economic crisis began in November 2008 and continued throughout 2009, we saw that security professionals who had been contemplating retirement decided to hold off. They looked at their retirement accounts and stock options and realized it wasn?t a good financial decision at the time. The third factor was that the normal volume of individuals who, for their own career advancement, would have sought out advancement through moves to other companies, decided instead to stay put because of market uncertainty. As a result, openings from newly created roles, turnover and internal promotions didn?t become available.?

Brennan writes about offshoring and stationing security heads outside the country where they hire local candidates. ? ?Brennan proposes that for those wanting to work in the security industry that they should expand their roles within a company. ?They should offer an employer a wider range of skill sets that will prove added value and heightened perspective.

He writes??Security executives should become involved in a wide range of initiatives across the organization that may not seem to have a direct impact on security. This will provide an opportunity for others to observe your skills as a business executive and develop working relationships while working on organization improvement and/or revenue enhancement projects. I have told many clients and candidates alike that one of the measures of success for a security executive is to be asked their opinion on business issues that are outside the scope of the function they lead.?

I found Brennan?s article most interesting and suggest others interesting in the security field should read it as well as Brennan?s book, Security Careers.
