Stocks higher, but volatile, after Bernanke speaks

It took a while, but investors eventually decided they liked what they heard from Ben Bernanke, and stock indexes rose enough on Friday to put them into positive territory for August.

Stocks gyrated after the Federal Reserve chairman spoke on Friday morning. They first gave up their morning gains, then bolted to their highs for the day, before settled in-between.

The Dow Jones industrial average ended the day up 90.13 points at 13,090.84.

A half-hour after trading began, Bernanke declared that the Fed is ready to take more action to help an economy that's "far from satisfactory."

Investors have been watching to see whether the Fed will buy more bonds to further lower long-term interest rates. Stocks fell initially, however, after it became clear that no such announcement was coming Friday and that Bernanke had stopped short of committing the Fed to any specific move.

Still, he said the Fed "should not rule out" new policies to improve the job market.

Stocks rebounded once investors parsed his comments. At one point the Dow was up as many as 151 points.

In terms of volatility, "it's been the most action we've seen in couple of weeks," said Ryan Larson, a senior equity trader at RBC Global Asset Management. He noted that pre-Labor Day volume was light, with many investors and traders on vacation, which can contribute to bigger price swings.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index closed up by 7.10 points at 1,406.58. The Nasdaq rose 18.25 points to close at 3,066.96.

The Dow finished the month of August up by 0.8 percent. The S&P 500 rose more than 2 percent for the month, and the Nasdaq rose more than 4 percent.

Investors looking for help from the Federal Reserve may only have one more chance before the election, said Frank Fantozzi, CEO of Planned Financial Services in Cleveland. The Fed's policy-making arm meets on Sept. 13. If it doesn't announce some form of stimulus then, it probably won't until after the election, he said.

"He's waiting until the last possible minute," Fantozzi said of Bernanke. "I think in the next two weeks they're going to really digest the economic data and say, 'Ok, do we get involved or not?'"

Bernanke's said at a Fed meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyo., that it's "probably not a coincidence" that stock prices have risen since March 2009, when the Fed first announced its plan to buy Treasuries and other securities. The Dow is up 77 percent since the 2009 announcement.

Bernanke's comments on Friday got more uniform reception in energy markets, which tend to rise on bullish signs for the economy. Oil prices jumped $1.81 to $96.43 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas and heating oil both rose more than 1 percent.

Stocks rose in nine out of 10 industry groups in the S&P 500. Energy stocks and materials stocks had the biggest gains, each up 1 percent. Utility stocks declined slightly.

Also Friday, the Commerce Department said factory orders rose 2.8 percent in July on surging demand for autos and commercial planes. However, orders for core capital goods ? a key measure of investment spending ? dropped 4 percent. That was that figure's fourth decline in five months.

Investors seemed more focused on Bernanke's comments and the overall higher factory orders, though.

Other shares with big moves on Friday included:

?Facebook set a new low. Downgrades by analysts pushed it down $1.03, or 5.4 percent, to $18.06. Its previous intraday low was $18.75. Facebook is down 52 percent from its $38 initial public offering price.

? US Airways Group Inc., up 2.5 percent after disclosing that it signed a confidentiality agreement that signals the beginning of talks with American Airlines for a possible merger.

? Zumiez fell 9.4 percent after the specialty sports and clothing retailer said its third-quarter earnings would be lower than analysts had expected.

? Science Applications International Corp. rose 3.4 percent after saying it will split at the end of next year into two businesses, with one focusing on national security, engineering and health customers, and another focused on government customers.

Stocks in Europe were mixed. The German DAX and the CAC 40 in France both rose about 1 percent. The FTSE 100 in Britain fell 0.1 percent.

The dollar fell, with the euro rising to $1.258, and the Japanese Yen rising against the dollar to 78.33.

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:16 p.m. ET Aug. 30, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) - The U.S. women's soccer team is going to savor its gold medal from the London Olympics a little longer.

The Americans said Thursday they will play two exhibitions against Germany next month as part of their post-Olympic "victory tour." The first game will be Oct. 20 in Bridgeview, Ill., with the second game three days later in East Hartford, Conn. The U.S. is 17-4-4 against the two-time World Cup champions, winning their last three meetings.

The Americans begin their tour Saturday against Costa Rica in Rochester, N.Y., Abby Wambach's hometown. They then host Australia on Sept. 16 in Carson, Calif., and Sept. 19 in Commerce City, Colo.

The U.S. women won their third straight Olympic title in London, beating Japan 2-1 in a rematch of last year's World Cup final.

Easy Workouts For Caregivers - Retirement Homes

As a stay-at-home caregiver for my disabled husband, my daily at-home workouts are vital for my physical health and mental sanity.? Luckily, I have danced and exercised for most of my 61 years?nothing extreme, as I am more weakling than athlete?but just enough to be fun and keep me in shape.

Over the years, I have amassed a large collection of workout DVDs?each DVD contains from 3 to 6 separate routines, including warm-up exercises and cool-down stretches.? I do part of one DVD each day, spending only 20-30 minutes.? The variety keeps me from getting bored: aerobics; strength training and toning with 3-lb. weights or toning band; kickboxing; Pilates; floor exercises; and lots of dance, from hip-hop, jazz and salsa, to ?Dancing with the Stars? routines.? Some workouts are more aerobically challenging, and some are just easy fun.? If there?s a day when I?m not feeling up to par, I may just do the warm-up and cool-down sections of a DVD for stretching and blood circulation.

Workout DVDs can be found online and in stores of all kinds (even the grocery store!); many can be had for only $10-$12.? There is an endless number of video workout choices, from extremely challenging all the way down to simple exercises that chair- or bed-bound people can do.? My favorite video instructors are Chris Freytag and Jennifer Galardi?their varied routines are fun and clearly taught, with moderately vigorous levels of exertion.

These home workouts do not require a huge amount of space; I do them in a relatively small area of my family room.? I don?t need to push myself to go out to a gym, which can be inconvenient and expensive;? nor do I need a gym-presentable workout wardrobe?I just wear whatever is comfortable!

As we age, it?s important to keep stimulating our minds?learning new dance routines works our memory and coordination skills.? I do my daily workout in the late afternoon, to re-energize me for the second half of my challenging caregiving day; if I miss exercising on any day, I really feel draggy.

Of course, you should check with your doctor before taking on new exercise routines if you do not ordinarily exercise, and always listen to your body to avoid over-exertion or injury.

Changes in workers' compensation laws underway in California ...

Earlier this month, chatter among lawmakers, attorneys, and unions began to multiply following reports that changes in California?s workers? compensation laws were underway. Worry began to mount panic as lobbyists began to push for changes to pass, while attorneys who represented injured workers petitioned to stop the action. Somewhere in the middle were folks like us who wanted workers? compensation reform done the right way ? unrushed, thought out, and most importantly, written in such a way to close often fraudulent loopholes that arise from psychological and cumulative trauma claims.

In midst of the purported chaos, the team at Work Comp Fraud Fighters sent a press release urging concerned business owners to petition Assemblyman Jose Solorio to reform workers? comp laws in California, especially before these so-called ?secret laws? came into effect.

The petition calls upon Solorio to make important changes to Senate Bill 863 ? a proposed legislation that would change the formula used to calculate benefits for injured workers. According to The Sacramento Bee, the proposed formula would raise ?payments by an average of 29 percent while eliminating aspects of the process that are frequently subject to lawsuits, such as enhancements for psychiatric problems, sexual dysfunction or loss of sleep.?

But the changes would translate to less business for workers? comp attorneys who defend claims such these. Lawyers are now battling out with legislators who want to reform workers? comp in our state.

?The devil is in the details and we didn?t get this bill until (Friday), and now we learn today that it?s been amended again last night,? said Brad Chalk, president of the California Applicants? Attorneys Association.

The Sacramento Bee reports:

An actuary from the Workers? Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California testified that the plan would reduce costs by $760 million in 2013.

The savings would be poured into raising benefits for permanently disabled workers. They would see their benefits increase by between 1 percent and 110 percent, depending on the severity of their injury, with an average increase of 29 percent, according to a report from the bill?s author, Sen. Kevin de Le?n, D-Los Angeles.

And employers would probably pay less for workers? compensation insurance, according to the State Compensation Insurance Fund, which says the savings achieved in the bill could cause its rates to drop by 5 percent to 7 percent.

Even though the promise for lower workers? comp rates is alluring to many small businesses, it?s important that every single detail be accounted for before this workers? comp bill passes. That?s why it?s never been so important that small- to mid-size businesses gather their alliances and sign this workers? comp petition right now.

Let?s get Solorio to meet with us and make the changes that California workers? comp so desperately needs.

Sign the petition now.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney's Republican National Convention sputters to life with the lonely banging of a gavel in a mostly empty hall, hardly the opening splash intended for the nation. With a sprawling and strengthening storm bearing down on the region, the party hastily rewrote the convention script to present the extravaganza's prime rituals and headline speakers later in the week ? Tropical Storm Isaac willing.

Nothing was certain Monday as the storm carved an unpredictable path toward the Gulf of Mexico, forcing planners to compress four days of events into three and otherwise improvise.

It was a complication, at best, for a party determined to cast the close election as a referendum on President Barack Obama's economic stewardship and Romney as the best hope for jobs and prosperity.

"It is what it is," said Reince Priebus, the Republican National Committee chairman, up early to tell the Monday morning talk shows that despite the storm and the compressed schedule, the GOP still can present a compelling argument for Mitt Romney.

"Obviously we want to pray for anyone that's in the pathway of this storm," Priebus said on NBC's "Today" show, "but the message is still the same: that all Americans deserve a better future and that this president ... didn't keep the promises he made in 2008."

From New Hampshire, where he and his wife, Ann, rehearsed their convention speeches in a high school auditorium, Romney expressed worry about the people in Isaac's way while predicting a "great convention" nonetheless.

But Sally Bradshaw, a Florida Republican and longtime senior aide to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, was not so sanguine. "It's a mess all around and it's fraught with risk," she said. "It's not good for anybody ? particularly the people impacted by the storm."

The concern was two-fold: that Tampa, hosting thousands of GOP delegates, would get sideswiped by the storm; and that it would be unseemly to engage in days of political celebration if Isaac made a destructive landfall anywhere on U.S. soil.

"You can tone down the happy-days-are-here-again a bit," said Rich Galen, a veteran Republican consultant in Washington. "Maybe you don't have the biggest balloon drop in history."

Republicans hoped another distracting tempest would blow over, too, concerning abortion. The Obama campaign and its allies have doubled down in efforts to exploit remarks more than a week ago by Rep. Todd Akin, the GOP's candidate for a Senate seat from Missouri, that a woman's body has a way of preventing pregnancy in the case of a "legitimate rape." The claim is unsupported by medical evidence. The congressman quickly apologized but resisted Romney's pressure to drop out of the race.

Romney, in a Fox interview, said in comments broadcast Sunday that the fallout over Akin's remarks "hurts our party and I think is damaging to women," adding: "It really is sad, isn't it? With all the issues that America faces, for the Obama campaign to continue to stoop to such a low level."

In the reworked convention schedule released early Sunday evening, organizers planned a pro forma opening Monday afternoon, lasting no more than five minutes or so. Priebus was to gavel the convention to order, then immediately recess. Few delegates were expected to attend. In the only bit of convention-hall theater, a debt clock was to be set in motion, to tally the nation's red ink during the convention.

Speakers who had been scheduled for Monday were to start making the case against Obama, under the day's theme, "we can do better." That theme now will be threaded through the following three days, said Romney adviser Russ Schriefer, in charge of the convention's planning. "Even though the days will be abbreviated, I absolutely believe we'll be able to get our message out," he said.

The roll call of state delegations affirming Romney as the party's nominee now is to unfold Tuesday, an evening capped by speeches from Ann Romney and an assortment of GOP governors. Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, gets the prime-time spotlight Wednesday and Romney closes out the spectacle Thursday night, his springboard into the final leg of the contest. That's all if the storm brings no further complications.

So far, many delegates were taking the shakeup in stride. "People are pretty resilient, and people knew going in that there were some weather issues," said Pat Shortridge, the Minnesota state GOP chairman, from Lino Lakes, Minn. "I don't think it's dampened enthusiasm."

Weather was recognized as potential trouble when Republicans chose to hold their convention in politically vital Florida during hurricane season, a decision made well before Romney locked up the nomination. And it's clear that memories of Hurricane Katrina, and the failure of a Republican administration to respond effectively to its Gulf Coast devastation in 2005, are hanging over Tampa now. Republicans have been so sensitive to the political risks from natural disasters that they delayed the start of their national convention by a day in 2008, when Hurricane Gustav bore down on the Gulf, far from their meeting in Minnesota.

And it surely wasn't lost on Tampa convention organizers that a gathering storm gave Obama an opportunity to show leadership. As the forecast worsened, the president directed the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help.

"The president also told the governor to let him know if there are any unmet needs or additional resources the administration could provide, including in support of efforts to ensure the safety of those visiting the state for the Republican National Convention," the White House said Sunday.

Both sides grappled with how to conduct their politicking in the face of the storm. Vice President Joe Biden, who had been prepared to make as much political hay as possible over the Republican convention, canceled a campaign swing through Florida on Monday and Tuesday.

Polls find a tight race, and it's one that is likely to be settled in a small number of battleground states.

An estimated $500 million has been spent on television commercials so far by the two candidates, their parties and supporting outside groups, nearly all of it in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada. Those states account for 100 electoral votes out of the 270 needed to win the White House. Republicans hope to expand the electoral map to include Pennsylvania, Michigan, perhaps Ryan's Wisconsin and even Minnesota, states with 68 electoral votes combined.

All four are usually reliably Democratic in presidential campaigns. Yet Romney has a financial advantage over the president, according to the most recent fundraising reports, and a move by the Republicans into any of them could force Obama to dip into his own campaign treasury in regions he has considered relatively safe.

Republican office-holders past and present said the economy is the key if Romney is to expand his appeal to women and Hispanic voters.

"We have to point out that the unemployment rate among young women is now 16 percent, that the unemployment rate among Hispanics is very high, that jobs and the economy are more important, perhaps, than maybe other issues," said Arizona Sen. John McCain, who lost to Obama in 2008.

Bush agreed, saying that Romney "can make inroads if he focuses on how do we create a climate of job creation and economic growth." If he succeeds, "I think people will move back towards the Republican side," the former Florida governor added.

Obama leads Romney among female voters and by an overwhelming margin among Hispanics, but trails substantially among men.

Sleeping Beauty: Art Performance with a Legal Catch - Neatorama

Ukrainian-Canadian artist Taras Polataiko reimagined the fairytale of Sleeping Beauty as performance art: a young maiden sleeps in the National Museum of Ukraine, until a kiss from a museum patron wakes her up. But there's a catch ...

To participate in the exhibit, potential princes have to sign a contract that states, "If I kiss the Beauty and she opens her eyes, I agree to marry her." The female performers have also entered into an agreement that reads, "If I open my eyes while being kissed, I agree to marry the kisser." So unlike the chivalrous charmers of yore, these contemporary heroes are contractually bound to live happily ever after if their princess so chooses.

New sport prosthesis launched for recreational athletes

Ottobock launches leg prosthesis with first sport knee joint and newly developed sport foot adapter dedicated to amateur athletes looking to enjoy active lifestyles

Ottobock Healthcare, the Official Technical Service Provider for the 2012 Paralympic Games, has today launched a running prosthesis that has been specifically developed for recreational athletes. The sport prosthesis uses the latest technology in rotation hydraulics to provide momentum and stability across a wide range of terrains. From the treadmill to forest trails, the prosthesis allows above-knee amputees to enjoy running and lead healthy, more active lifestyles.

The new sport prosthesis is compact, light and sturdy and is suitable for a body weight of up to 100kg. Optimised for running sports, it comprises the new 3S80 Sport knee joint, 1E90 Sprinter Carbon Foot and the newly developed 4R204 Sport Foot Adapter.

3S80 Sports Knee Joint

The 3S80 knee joint is designed to withstand the high pressure imposed whilst running. Rotation hydraulics have been optimised for running sports; the joint dampens the extension and flexion movements in the swing phase in such a way that a dynamic movement pattern is enabled even at higher stride rates while running. The manually operated lock on the new knee joint facilitates a secure stance that can be of use during warm-ups and stretching.

1E90 Sprinter Carbon Foot

The durable 1E90 Sprinter carbon spring foot offers a particularly high energy return, making it ideal for running. Various stiffness versions of the spring are available to suit every body weight and running experience. Two soles are available; the universal sole with an all-terrain tread is suitable for running on a variety of surfaces such as forest trails, while the spike sole can be used for fast sprints, especially on an all-weather running track.

4R204 Sport Foot Adapter

The newly developed sport foot adapter joins the knee joint to the foot. A fitting guide is included with delivery of the sport prosthesis, allowing the prosthetist to accurately align and adjust the sport prosthesis for the individual. Running exercises and a user step-by-step guide are also provided for prosthetists.

?The sport prosthesis is suitable for many different types of terrain and is ideal for use on the treadmill, in the fitness studio or jogging through forest trails,? said Philip Yates, Managing Director at Ottobock UK. ?We?re expecting a rise in people looking to try new sports following the Paralympics and this new sport prosthesis is a great solution for above-knee amputees living active lifestyles, but it can also be used for other sports that involve running, such as the long jump, high jump and javelin.?

NYPD confirms: All bystanders hit by police bullets

Officials in New York City defend police officers use of deadly force, as seen on graphic video, to stop gunman Jeffrey Johnson outside the Empire State Building. Nine bystanders were injured. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

?

By Tom Hays and Verena Dobnik, NBCNewYork.com

All nine people wounded during a dramatic confrontation between police and a gunman outside the Empire State Building were struck by bullets fired by the two officers, police said Saturday, citing ballistics evidence.

The veteran patrolmen who opened fire on the suit-wearing gunman, Jeffrey Johnson, had only an instant to react when he whirled and pointed a .45-caliber pistol as they approached him from behind on a busy sidewalk.

Officer Craig Matthews shot seven times. Officer Robert Sinishtaj fired nine times, police said. Neither had ever fired their weapons before on a patrol.

More from NBCNewYork.com

The volley of gunfire felled Johnson in just a few seconds and left nine other people bleeding on the sidewalk.

In the initial chaos Friday, it wasn't clear whether Johnson or the officers were responsible for the trail of wounded, but based on ballistic and other evidence, "it appears that all nine of the victims were struck either by fragments or by bullets fired by police," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters on Saturday at a community event in Harlem.

Surveillance video shows what transpired Friday when gunman Jeffrey Johnson drew his weapon and opened fire on police on a street packed with pedestrians in midtown Manhattan. Who was Johnson and what possibly caused him to become violent?

He reiterated that the officers appeared to have no choice but to shoot Johnson, whose body had 10 bullet wounds in the chest, arms and legs.

"I believe it was handled well," Kelly said.

The officers confronted Johnson as he walked, casually, down the street after gunning down a former co-worker on the sidewalk outside the office they once shared. The shooting happened at 9 a.m., as the neighborhood bustled with people arriving for work.

'Look of death': Co-workers tell of office feud

The gunman and his victim, Steve Ercolino, had a history of workplace squabbles before Johnson was laid off from their company, Hazan Import Corp., a year ago. At one point, the two men had grappled physically in an elevator.

John Koch, the property manager at the office building where the men worked, said security camera footage showed the two pushing and shoving. The tussle ended when Ercolino, a much larger man, pinned Johnson against the wall of the elevator by the throat, Koch said. Ercolino let him go after a few moments, and the two men went their separate ways.

"They didn't like each other," Koch said.

On Friday, Johnson shot Ercolino five times in the head and face, a medical examiner's spokeswoman said. After the shooting, Johnson, an eccentric T-shirt designer and avid bird-watcher who wore a suit every day, even when photographing hawks in Central Park, walked away as if nothing had happened.

Alerted by a construction worker, Officers Matthews and Sinishtaj gave chase as Johnson rounded a corner and walked along Fifth Avenue, in front of the landmark skyscraper.

A security videotape from the scene shows several civilians ? including three sitting on a bench only a few feet away ? scattering as the officers opened fire.

Police have determined that three people were struck by whole bullets ? two of which were removed from victims at the hospital ? and the rest were grazed "by fragments of some sort," Kelly said.

Three people remained hospitalized, all in stable condition, police said.

Both Matthews, 39, and Sinishtaj, 40, joined the nation's largest police department 15 years ago.

Matthews had drawn attention earlier this year by filing a lawsuit against the New York Police Department that accused his superiors of unfairly punishing him for not meeting arrest quotas. A judge threw out the complaint.

There was no immediate response to a message left with the union representing the two officers.

The shooting didn't deter tourists from flocking to the Empire State Building as usual on Saturday.

Patricia Flynn, 57, a retired schoolteacher, visited the building's peak with her elderly mother, who once worked in the skyscraper as a secretary.

"But I didn't tell her what happened," said Flynn, adding that her mother was unaware of Friday's shooting. "And she really enjoyed the view."

A group of 31 tourists from all over France held a meeting Friday night at their nearby hotel to decide whether to cancel their planned Empire State Building visit.

"We were scared, and we thought it was a risk," said Catherine Krukar, 38, a teacher.

But in the end, they went ahead with the visit, she said after descending from the observation tower,

"We know it can happen anywhere, and we wanted to see the Empire State Building," Krukar said. "It was beautiful!

Romney reaches out to women before GOP convention

(AP) ? Mitt Romney said it is "sad" that President Barack Obama's campaign is trying to link him to Rep. Todd Akin's statements about abortion, as top Republicans preparing for the party's nominating convention urged the GOP presidential challenger to reach out to women and Hispanics.

The remarks came Sunday as Republicans descending on Florida prepared to cram four days of events into three because of the threat caused by the approach of Tropical Storm Isaac.

Romney said that as Massachusetts governor, he had helped women by guaranteeing coverage for them ? and men as well ? by enacting that state's health care coverage legislation. Romney has pledged that as president he would repeal Obama's health care overhaul law ? which is similar to the Massachusetts statute ? but Romney said he was proud of that accomplishment.

Akin is the GOP Missouri Senate candidate who said women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy after a "legitimate" rape. Romney and other GOP leaders have criticized those statements and urged Akin to drop out of the Senate race.

Asked in an interview broadcast Sunday on "Fox News Sunday" about Obama campaign efforts to link Akin's remarks to Romney and other Republicans, Romney said, "It really is sad, isn't it, with all the issues that America faces for the Obama campaign to continue to stoop to such a low level."

Romney said the controversy over Akin "hurts our party and I think is damaging to women."

Meanwhile, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Romney must sell his message to women and Hispanics if he is to oust Obama in the November elections.

Speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press," the former GOP presidential candidate said Romney must convince women and Hispanics that "jobs and the economy are more important perhaps than other issues."

Former Florida GOP Gov. Jeb Bush had a similar message about the Hispanic vote, saying on NBC, "Governor Romney can make inroads if he focuses on how do we create a climate of job creation and economic growth."

Bush, who has long urged his party to craft a more conciliatory message to Hispanics, added, "We've got to have a better tone going forward over the long haul for sure. You can't ask people to join your cause and then send a signal that 'you're really not wanted.' It just doesn't work."

Blue skies with patches of clouds hung over Tampa early Sunday, though winds were picking up as the major storm approached.

As aides in Tampa scramble, Romney is taking a rare day off the campaign trail at his lakeside vacation home in New Hampshire, receiving updates on the storm and making final preparations for the Thursday speech with which he will accept his party's presidential nomination.

"The safety of those in Isaac's path is of the utmost importance," Romney tweeted after Republican officials announced they had called off Monday's convention proceedings.

Because of possible storm surges and flooding Isaac could bring, convention organizers said they were making contingency plans to move delegates who have been booked into beachfront hotels to other locations if necessary. They indicated the schedule shift also was meant to prevent overburdening emergency response personnel at the height of the storm.

The GOP made the announcement late Saturday, saying that while the convention would officially be gaveled into session on Monday as scheduled, events would be postponed until Tuesday.

Convention spokesman James Davis said organizers were closely monitoring the storm's path but planned to rely on emergency management officials to guide decisions on whether to relocate delegates at waterfront hotels. So far, none have been moved nor had officials received word of major problems for inbound delegates.

Davis said the GOP's advice to delegates was "if your travel plans have not been interrupted and they're set, we recommend you come on down."

With Isaac boring down on the coast, President Barack Obama, who had been at Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, dispatched the Federal Emergency Management Agency to establish a command center and move more resources into the state. Vice President Joe Biden scrapped a planned campaign trip into Florida that was to counter the start of the GOP convention.

Republicans hope to use this week's convention to cast Romney as a determined leader with the know-how to fix the country's economy. They also want to introduce him as a family oriented figure to counter the image of him as a ruthless businessman as Democrats have sought to brand him.

While the Romneys reveled in their convention, Obama was due to travel next week to college towns in Iowa, Colorado and Virginia to court young voters and college students. The president's nomination for a desired second term was to come a week later in Charlotte, N.C., during a Democratic convention beginning Sept. 4, right on the heels of the Republican convention.

In an interview with The Associated Press published Saturday, Obama sought to portray Romney as someone beholden to "extreme positions" on economic and social issues. Obama took pains to paint Romney and his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, as ideologues at a time when voters seem frustrated by government gridlock.

After a near-constant travel schedule since he was announced as the GOP vice presidential candidate, Ryan was also taking a rare break. Following a Saturday evening fundraiser in Manchester, N.H., he returned home to Janesville, Wis. Aides said Ryan planned a quiet Sunday. Then, before flying to Florida, he was to appear at a Monday rally in his hometown that was likely to offer him a hero's sendoff.

A few of Romney's former presidential rivals were holding events of their own in Tampa. Herman Cain and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann ? both have endorsed Romney ? were appearing at a joint event. Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who hasn't conferred his blessing on the presumptive nominee, was anticipating thousands at a University of South Florida rally.

A Huge Thanks to The Lit Coach for including me in her post: Blogs ...

Tuesday, I shared the Five Pillars of Effective Blogs?as I shared with the LARARWA group this past weekend:

Compelling Content,?Consistent Posts,?Fresh Ideas,?Engagement, and?Share-ability

Today, I?d like share with you some of the blogs I discussed and why they work.

Yarnagogo?- The blog that launched Knit Lit Romance author Rachael Herron?s career. Rachael shared with me that not only did her blog come before she scored an agent and a three book deal, it pretty much sealed the deal. Her agent and editorial team loved her authentic voice and how she connected with her audience.

Girlfriends Book Club ? This collaborative blog featuring Women?s Fiction heavy hitters Ellen Meister, Lauren Baratz-Logsted, Marilyn Brant, Maggie Mar (who I had the great pleasure of meeting at the LARA event) and many more, is a prime example of great content, consistency, fresh ideas, robust?engagement?with the audience and a community of sharing between most involved on the blog.

I asked Ellen Meister about how the blog began and how they?ve found success as a popular blog. Here?s what she had this to say:

The Girlfriends Book Club blog rose from the ashes of The Girlfriends Cyber Circuit, which was a group of commercially published women authors who posted about each other?s books. That went on successfully for a number of years and eventually just burned itself out. Author Karin Gillespie deserves some kind of medal, because she not only ran the GCC but continues to coordinate and schedule the group blog. ? It?s a tremendously effective way of reaching people, because there?s strength in numbers. With 40 writers as part of the group, the blog pulls from a vast network. ? As it turns out, the majority the blog?s readers seem to be aspiring writers. Recognizing this, we post a lot of writing and marketing tips for aspiring authors. My most popular post was?20 Social Media Tips for Writers. Other favorite posts include?16 Tips for Writing Sexy Scenes,?18 Novelists Share Their Writing Routines?and?Girlfriends Share Tips on How to Be a Productive Writer.? ? As far as promoting our own books, it?s clear that the most popular posts are the ones that offer giveaways. ? Importantly, the women in the group are tremendously supportive, and we help spread the word about each other?s posts with Tweets and Facebook status updates. ?

Menologues?-?Robin Donovan, author of Is it Still Murder Even if She Was a Bitch?, began blogging about menopause ?because stumbling blindly through menopause is less funny than it sounds.? She wanted to reach a community of women who were going through what she was going through and it worked. Robin had a clearly defined audience, wrote specifically for them and soon, her blog was picked up by Vibrant Nation.

Twinfatuation?-?Twins expert and author Cheryl Lage has a world-wide audience, has written for an impressive array of national and local magazines, and ezines, has appeared on Martha Stewart Live Radio, has been called by The Today Show and so much more, mostly because of her blog. But like many bloggers who author books, she didn?t begin with a blog. Cheryl contacted me when I was a literary agent and she, a mother of adorable toddler twins and a writer with a great idea about a book for parents of twins and multiples. Cheryl?s story is very special to me and I was delighted to share it on literary agent Rachelle Gardner?s blog?(another fabulous blog!). I encourage you to read the short post on how we started building her platform as a twin parenting expert before we sold her manuscript. You may see some of your questions and concerns answered in the robust comment thread.

A Walking Carnival?-?This has got to be my favorite slice of life blog ever. I like to say Deirdre Lewis, the creator of AWC, is the love child of Erma Bombeck and David Sedaris. A filmmaker and screenwriter by trade, Deirdre?s unique quirkiness?shines through her blog as she takes you through her neighborhood in Echo Park, CA, to a dusty old camera shop, to an airport book store and to her father?s house. There is no post I don?t absolutely love. This blog is ALWAYS fresh, pretty consistent and I feel the content is spectacularly good. One of her latest posts is an all imagined dialog between two car mechanics ? notice how the conversation reveals so much about the narrator. Deirdre is not repped by an agent, but it won?t be long before she is. She uses the blog to discover her voice and hone her craft. Works for me!

What blogs do you absolutely love and why? Share them below.
