I probably golf about as well as a slug wages war.... In fact, out of consideration for my friends (I embarrass them), I quit playing with anybody I know. It was too hard for them to watch. But I can still appreciate what a golf enthusiast said about the game.
He listed three mental techniques to improve one's golf game. And the great part is this: these techniques not only help to improve a game, they can help all of us live better lives. They are mental attitudes that can help you and me live more in the moment and less in the past or the future. Here they are? golf tips for better living.
1. Resist the urge to add up your score as you go along. If you anticipate your score, you'll be distracted from the task at hand.
In other words, live more in the present. Clear your mind of past mistakes and even past successes, and try to think only about the here and now.
2. Focus. Concentrate on hitting great shots rather than worrying about bad ones or what others will think if you miss. Visualize the ball going to your target.
This is a terrific technique for daily living. Focus. Concentrate on doing the present task well rather than worrying about what others will think if you should "mess up." And get a picture in your mind's eye of succeeding at the thing you are doing right now.
3. Keep your mind on the hole you're playing. Don't think about how you are going to play the last hole.
This is about resisting the urge to think ahead. If we pay close attention to the present, the future will take care of itself. Our present moment is full of power and wonder. It deserves our full attention.
Now, did you notice what all of these tips have in common? They are not about understanding the past or setting goals for the future. They are simply about living in the present moment.
Writer H.G. Wells once noted, "Man must not allow the clock and the calendar to blind him to the fact that each moment of life is a miracle and a mystery." Anybody can get more out of life who concentrates on and cherishes the here and now ? and we?re not talking about golf.
The present is too important not to pay attention to it. One doctor said, "I have learned from speaking to many cancer survivor groups that (when you have cancer) the watch on your hand no longer says, 'Tick, tick, tick.' It now says, 'Precious, precious, precious.'"
When the present moment is precious, everything else takes care of itself.

Zheng Xiaoxiang of the Brain-Computer Interface Research Team at Zhejiang University in Zijingang, China, and colleagues announced earlier this week that they had succeeded in capturing and deciphering the signals from the monkey's brain and interpreting them into the real-time robotic finger movements.
The two sensors implanted in Jianhui's brain monitor just 200 neurons in his motor cortex, Zheng says. However, this was enough to accurately interpret the monkey's movements and control the robotic hand.
Humans have used electrodes to control prosthetic arms, but Zheng claims this research looks at the finer movements of the fingers.
"Hand moves are associated with at least several hundreds of thousands of neurons," she said. "We now decipher the moves based on the signals of about 200 neurons. Of course, the orders we produced are still distant from the truly flexible finger moves in complexity and fineness."

Erin Saldin?s debut novel, The Girls of No Return, caught my eye for several reasons: as an outdoor lover, I liked the idea of a book about a wilderness school for teen girls, and it sounded like it had some emotional depth to it.? My first impressions were correct, and I read this compelling novel in just a few short days.
At the start of the novel, it?s not entirely clear why Lida?s father and stepmother are sending her away to the Alice Marshall School for Girls, deep in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area, but it is obvious that she must have some serious emotional problems.? In fact, Lida holds her problems and her emotions very tightly inside her, even when all of the other girls at the wilderness school are beginning to share their feelings during Circle Share time.? As the girls hike, canoe, go to classes, and talk about their problems, Lida remains hesitant to let anyone in, so it is a big deal when the new, glamorous and mysterious girl, Gia, chooses Lida above all of the girls as her best friend.
All of the girls have their secrets, their Thing that landed them at Alice Marshall in the first place. With Gia, Lida finally begins to open up and share some of what she is feeling, but it makes her increasingly uncomfortable that Gia doesn?t seem to reciprocate.? Meanwhile, there are other girls who would like to befriend Lida, but she doesn?t want to let them in; it is clear she has been badly hurt in the past.? The tension builds to the exciting climax when it is time for the girls to go on their solo overnight backpacking trip.
I really enjoyed this book about teen girls facing their inner demons. The wilderness setting is unique and each of the girls has a distinctive personality and past. I found it engaging, suspenseful, and interesting, and I look forward to reading more from Erin Saldin.

When a caregiver has ample information regarding a person's medical history, treatments are more effective and efficient. Unfortunately, few people have complete medical records -- due, in large part, to a lack of any universal repository tools for keeping those records. Mayo Clinic, along with its partners in a program called the Southeast Minnesota Beacon Community, is working on solutions to this problem. They are showcasing their work through demonstrations at the 12th annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Conference & Exhibition (HiMSS), from Feb. 20 to 24 in Las Vegas.
In May 2010, southeast Minnesota was one of 17 areas nationwide selected for funding by a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services initiative called the Beacon Community Program. The initiative sought to fund health care entities looking for ways to use technology to improve the efficiency and delivery of health care while cutting costs. The Southeast Minnesota Beacon Community was created through collaboration among Mayo Clinic, Mayo Clinic Health System, Olmsted Medical Center, Winona Health, Allina Hospital Owatonna, and 11 county public health departments in the region. Now, less than two years after receiving funding, the group has been asked to share its work at the HiMSS Conference, using technology and processes it developed to show how health information can be transferred between its member institutions in real time. Two scenarios are being showcased at demonstration kiosks in the HiMSS exhibition hall.
The first scenario demonstrates the generation and exchange of a "Continuity of Care Document," or CCD. In this scenario, a test patient visits Mayo Clinic after being seen at Olmsted Medical Center for diabetes mellitus. Using Health Information Exchange (HIE) technology, Mayo Clinic retrieves a CCD from the patient's visit to Olmsted Medical Center. The document contains information such as immunization records, known allergies and medications being taken, and the results of any tests done during the prior visit.
In the second scenario, a public health nurse is preparing to visit an asthmatic patient in his home, to help solve a problem the patient is having with his medication. The nurse reviews a medication list that is parsed and persisted into the Electronic Public Health Record (EPHR) from other providers' CCDs. The nurse is able to review this list with the patient transfer medications from the list into a current medication reconciliation area and add any additional medications the patient is taking. For the first time the nurse is able to talk with the patient about what medications were prescribed and discuss issues that might prevent the patient from taking the recommended medications.
These scenarios are just a partial demonstration of the full capabilities of Southeast Minnesota Beacon's HIE capacity, which supports the exchange of any consenting patient's information among all providers -- including public health -- in the region. "Improving HIE technology is vital to improving patient care," says Christopher Chute, M.D., Dr.P.H. co-principal investigator for the Southeast Minnesota Beacon Community. "By making patient information available in one place, we will be able to solve problems more effectively, avoid redundancies and improve continuity in care, which will strengthen care delivery and cut costs."
The demonstrations are scheduled for various times Tuesday, Feb. 21, through Thursday, Feb. 23, at kiosks in the conference center, Hall G, booth #11000, in the ONC/FHA Area of Interoperability Showcase. A complete demonstration schedule is available at the ONC booth, #14824, in Hall G.

No relationship is perfect. We all know this. We?re not perfect and therefore our relationships will never be perfect either.
That?s okay. That?s normal.
But success in relationships ? romantic and otherwise ? have a lot to do with proper communication. In fact, most relationship problems are caused by poor communication.
Here are the top communication issues in romantic relationships and how to work through them:
The Problem:?Misunderstanding words and actions. It?s really easy to misinterpret your partner?s words, emails, gestures, and actions to mean something other than what he or she intended. We?re all human ? it happens.
The Solution: Don?t immediately jump to conclusions. Instead of assuming you know what the other is thinking, ask for clarification. Continue asking for clarification until you understand what your partner is really saying.
The Problem:?You don?t talk enough. In a long-term relationship, most of us eventually hit a point where we feel we don?t communicate much any more. We don?t hang out. We have our routines (wake up, shower, dress, go to work, come home), and most don?t involve the other person as much as they should.
The Solution: There?s a simple fix for not communicating enough:?recognizing that you?re no longer communicating like you once did and talking more.?Create some alone time to carve out for just the two of you.
The Problem: You?re avoiding certain topics with your partner. Perhaps this is the reason that you?re not talking to one another anymore. Maybe you?re upset with your partner. Either way, you don?t feel like discussing it, so instead, you clam up and say nothing. Your walls go up as a way of avoiding the issue.
The Solution: You?re not benefiting your relationship in any way by avoiding problems. Instead of retreating and putting up big walls, take a long hard look at the issues and face them together. This way, you can work together to come up with a solution.
The Problem:You need to be right. We?ve all had those times when we couldn?t back down from an argument. We?re right, we know it, and we have to prove it. So we pick a fight (or continue to beat a dead horse) until we feel we?ve won.
The Solution: Being right isn?t as important as having open lines of communication. Being willing to see things from another point of view may not change how you feel, but it does give you the incredible opportunity to learn.

Loss of a relationship occurs for many other reasons. Sometimes it is the cycle of life, that everything changes and nothing is permanent but change. Loved ones may move away or die. There may be arguments that aren?t resolved or disappointments that aren?t forgiven.
Sometimes the emotionally sensitive experience a kind of traumatic reaction around relationships. Perhaps because of a history of lost relationships, perceived/actual rejections, an insecure or neglectful relationship with their parents, or other past experiences, the emotionally sensitive may be hyper-alert for any signs of ?judgment, neglect, or discontent by others.
