Royal Mail listing draws closer as Britain seeks advisers

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain said it expects to appoint lead bank advisers for a possible stock market listing of Royal Mail Group by the end of May, as it pushes on with plans to privatise the firm.
In what would be one of the most significant privatisations of a British asset since John Major's Conservative government sold the railways in the 1990s, Business Minister Michael Fallon said on Monday a listing is the preferred method of sale for government and that investor feedback so far had been positive.
An initial public offering (IPO) of the group, which has around 150,000 staff and sales of 9.5 billion pounds, is expected to take place this autumn, with British media reports valuing it at between 2 and 3 billion pounds.
In a speech to the Policy Exchange, Fallon said Royal Mail would also soon begin exploring access to debt market capital.
Momentum behind privatising Royal Mail has increased since government took on its hefty pension deficit last year and the firm received regulatory approval to rise some stamp prices. It says it needs access to external capital for future investment.
The group posted half-year operating profit of 144 million pounds in November, up from 12 million pounds a year before, after reshaping the company towards a growing parcels market and away from declining letter volumes.
Included in a sale will be a 10 percent stake reserved for Royal Mail workers, in what would be the largest employee share scheme for 25 years, the government said. It has yet to clarify if shares would be free or at a discounted price.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU), which represents 120,000 Royal Mail workers, has fiercely opposed government's privatisation plans, fearing it would lead to a break-up of the company, job losses and worse terms and conditions.
Last December Royal Mail, which has shed around 50,000 staff in the last decade, enlisted Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs to work alongside Barclays as its financial advisers. UBS has been advising the government.

Google's virtual assistant invades Siri's turf
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google is trying to upstage Siri, the sometimes droll assistant that answers questions and helps people manage their lives on Apple's iPhone and iPad.
The duel begins Monday with the release of a free iPhone and iPad app that features Google Now, a technology that performs many of the same functions as Siri.
It's the first time that Google Now has been available on smartphones and tablet computers that aren't running on the latest version of Google's Android software. The technology, which debuted nine months ago, is being included in an upgrade to Google's search application for iOS, the Apple Inc. software that powers the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. It's up to each user to decide whether to activate Google Now within the redesigned search app.
Google Now's invasion of Siri's turf marks Google Inc.'s latest attempt to lure iPhone and iPad users away from a service that Apple built into its own devices.
Google quickly won over millions of iPhone users in December when it released a mapping application to replace the navigation system that Apple dumped when it redesigned iOS last fall. Apple's maps application proved to be inferior to Google's ousted service. The app's bugs and glitches made Apple the butt of jokes and fueled demand for Google to develop a new option.
Apple has been losing to Google on other fronts in a rapidly growing mobile computing market, an arena that was revolutionized with the iPhone's release in 2007. Smartphones and tablet computers running Google's free Android software have been steadily expanding their market share in recent years, partly because they tend to be less expensive than the iPhone and iPad. At the end of 2012, Android devices held about 69 percent of the smartphone market while iOS held about 19 percent, according to the research firm IDC.
Android's success has been particularly galling for Apple because its late CEO Steve Jobs believed Google stole many of its ideas for the software from the iPhone. That led to a series of court battles over alleged patent infringement, including a high-profile trial last year that culminated in Apple winning hundreds of millions in damages from Samsung Electronics, the top seller of Android phones. That dispute is still embroiled in appeals.
The rise of Android also is squeezing Apple's profit margins, and has contributed to a 40 percent drop in the company's stock price since it peaked at $705.07 last September around the time that the iPhone 5 came out.
Android's popularity is good news for Google because the company's services are built into most versions of the operating system. That brings more traffic to Google services, creating more opportunities for the company to sell ads ? the main source of Google's revenue.
Siri is billed by Apple as an "intelligent feature." Since the technology's release in October 2011, Apple has made it a centerpiece of some marketing campaigns that depict Siri and its automated female voice as an endearing and occasionally even pithy companion.
When asked for an opinion about Google Now, Siri responded: "If it's all the same to you, I'd rather Google later."
Google believes its Siri counterpart is smarter because Google Now is designed to learn about a user's preferences and then provide helpful information before it's even asked to do so. The technology draws upon information that Google gleans from search requests other interactions with the company's other services. Knowing a person's location also helps Google Now serve up helpful information without being asked.
"This concept of predicting your needs and showing you them at the right time is unique to Google Now," said Baris Gultekin, Google Now's director of product management. "We want computers to do the hard work so our users can focus on what matters to them so they can get on with their lives."
If the technology is working right, Google Now is supposed to do things like automatically tell people what the local weather is like when they awaken to help decide what to wear and provide a report on traffic conditions for the commute to work. During the day, Google Now might provide an update on the score of a user's favorite sports team or a stock quote of a company in a user's investment portfolio. On a Friday evening, Google Now might offer suggestions for movies to see or other weekend events tailored to a user's interests. For international travelers, Google Now might provide currency conversion rates, language translations of common phrases and the time back home.
Most of this automatic information is provided in summaries that Google calls "cards." Like Siri, Google Now also is equipped with voice technology that allows it to respond to questions and interact with users, though it hasn't shown the wit that amuses some of Siri's users.
The Google Now app for iOS isn't as comprehensive as the Android app, which only works on devices running on the latest version of Android ? known as "Jelly Bean." Some of the Android features missing from Google Now's iOS app include cards for showing airline boarding passes and movie tickets bought though online vendor Fandango. Both of those options are available on the iOS through Apple's built-in Passbook feature that's designed to be a digital wallet.
Google Now's expansion on to the iOS underscores Google's ambitions for the service. The company, which is based in Mountain View, Calif., views it as a pivotal tool in its effort to peer deeper into its users' brains. In doing so, Google believes it will be able to provide more useful services and also show more relevant ads. For Google Now to become more intuitive, it needs to widen its availability.
"The more you use Google Now, we will have a better chance of understanding what your needs are and providing you with the right information," Gultekin said. "It's a virtuous cycle."
Gultekin declined to discuss whether there are plans to make Google Now apps for mobile devices running on Microsoft's Windows system. He also refused to comment on speculation circulating in technology blogs that a Web version of Google Now will be offered as a replacement for iGoogle, a tool that allows people to encircle the Google search engine with a variety of services suited to their tastes. IGoogle is scheduled to close in November.

Samsung extends mobile market lead as Nokia dwindles, Apple stalls
Samsung cleaned up in the first quarter. The South Korea-based vendor raked in record profits between January and March, and market research firm Strategy Analytics helps illustrate just how dominant Samsung has become in terms of shipment volumes. As the company?s lead in the smartphone market grew last quarter, so too did its share of all global cell phone shipments.?According to?Strategy Analytics, Samsung shipped?106.6 million mobile phones worldwide in Q1 2013 to capture 28.6% of the global market. Those stats are up from the same quarter last year, when Samsung shipped 92.5 million units good for 24.5% of the market.

One-time market leader Nokia continued to see the past slip away, as first-quarter mobile phone shipments plummeted to 61.9 million units from 82.7 million in the year-ago quarter. Nokia?s market share also dipped, of course, from 21.9% in Q1 2012 to 16.6% in Q1 2013.

Apple?s growth in the March quarter slowed substantially despite climbing to 37.4 million iPhones from to 35.1 million in the same quarter a year earlier. The global mobile phone market outgrew Apple by a healthy rate though, and its market share climbed less than a point to 10% in Q1.
?Ongoing macroeconomic challenges in Asia, Europe and North America, relatively tighter operator upgrade policies for 3G phones, and slowing volumes of 2G feature phones were among the key reasons why global mobile phone shipments dipped minus 1 percent annually to reach 372.7 million units in Q1 2013,? said Strategy Analytics senior analyst?Neil Shah. ?Fuelled by robust demand for its popular Galaxy portfolio, Samsung was the star performer, shipping 106.6 million mobile phones worldwide and capturing a record 29 percent marketshare to solidify its first-place lead.?
?Nokia?s global mobile phone shipments fell 25 percent from 82.7 million units in Q1 2012 to 61.9 million in Q1 2013,? Strategy Analytics? senior director Neil Mawston added.??Weak Symbian smartphone volumes and lackluster feature phone demand caused Nokia?s shrinkage. Nonetheless, Nokia remains the world?s second largest mobile phone vendor by volume, and if it can expand aggressively its fast-growing Lumia and Asha ranges this year, then there is still potential for Nokia?s position to stabilize or recover.?
Behind Apple, Strategy Analytics said LG shipped an estimated 16.2 million mobile phones in the first quarter to take 4.3% of the market, and ZTE rounded out the top-5 with 13 million phones shipped, good for 3.5% of the global market.
Rival research firm IDC painted a similar picture of the top-5 mobile vendors last quarter, but the numbers vary slightly. According to its estimates, Samsung shipped 115 million phones for 27.5% of the global market, Nokia shipped 61.9 million for a 14.8% share, and Apple?s 37.4 million iPhones accounted for just 8.9% of the global cell phone market. LG shipped an estimated 15.4 million phones for 3.7% of the market according to IDC, and ZTE?s 13.5 million units shipped were good for a 3.2% share.

Bomb damages police station in Libya's Benghazi, no injuries
BENGHAZI (Reuters) - A bomb exploded outside a police station in the restive eastern Libyan city of Benghazi on Saturday causing extensive damage to the building but no injuries.
A spate of bombings and assassinations in Benghazi, cradle of the 2011 uprising that ousted dictator Muammar Gaddafi, has been attributed to Islamic militants.
"Around six o'clock this morning, an explosive device placed under one of the windows of the building exploded, causing severe damage," said station commander Colonel Matar Mohammer. He said he had no information on who carried out the attack.
Gunmen hit a different police station in Benghazi last week freeing a number of detainees, following a similar attack in the Libyan capital of Tripoli in early April.
On Tuesday a bomb at the French embassy in Tripoli injured several people, and, one diplomat said, the Radisson Hotel in the capital was evacuated on Friday after a bomb threat, as the spread of insecurity from the east intensifies.

TRAPPIST participated in the detection of ten percent of all transiting exoplanets known to date
Apr. 25, 2013 ? Among the many planets detected orbiting other stars (exoplanets) over the last twenty years, a little less than three hundred periodically pass in front of their star. This is what astronomers call a planetary transit. Exoplanets that "transit" their stars are key objects for the study of other planetary systems, because they are the only planets beyond our solar system that can be studied in detail, both in terms of their physical parameters (mass, radius, orbital parameters) and their atmospheric properties (thermal structure, dynamics, composition).
The University of Liege (ULg) is deeply involved in this exciting research topic, notably through its TRAPPIST[1] robotic telescope installed in 2010 in one of the best astronomical sites of the world, the La Silla European Southern Observatory in the Chilean Atacama desert. One of the scientific objectives of this telescope is the detection and study of exoplanets via the accurate measurement of their transits. In just three years, it has fully demonstrated its great potential in this area. Indeed, TRAPPIST participated in the detection of thirty planets, representing ten percent of all transiting exoplanets known to date. This important contribution is the result of the excellent expertise of the Liege astronomers, and their active collaboration with other international teams of "planet hunters," including the Swiss team of Professor Didier Queloz, co-discoverer of the first exoplanet in 1995.
Among the thirty exoplanets co-detected by TRAPPIST, most are gas giants similar to Jupiter, but in much closer orbits. "With the intense radiation that they undergo from their star, these planets are real gold mines for the study of other worlds," says Micha?l Gillon, Principal Investigator of the TRAPPIST exoplanets program. "Indeed, it makes possible a number of measurements that give us access to valuable information on their atmospheric properties. " TRAPPIST also detected the transit of a planet twice smaller than Jupiter orbiting a nearby star much less massive than the Sun. "The name of this small planet is GJ3470b" continues Micha?l Gillon, "and it has a mass and a size comparable to those of Uranus and Neptune, suggesting a composition rich in water ice. The detection of this planet much smaller than Jupiter is very exciting, not only for its own study, but also because it demonstrates that by focusing on even less massive stars, TRAPPIST should be able to detect rocky planets similar in size and mass to Earth. Our current projects go in that direction. "
Probably dreaming of other Earths too, TRAPPIST continues to observe the gorgeous Chilean sky night after night, to the delight of Liege astronomers that analyze its valuable data thirteen thousand kilometers away ...

Jeter has 'no doubt' that he'll return to Yankees
NEW YORK (AP) ? Don't count out the captain.
Derek Jeter is certain he will return to the New York Yankees this season at the same level that made him one of baseball's most revered players.
In a jocular mood and wearing pinstriped pants, a practice jersey and hat, Jeter expressed frustration in learning last week that there was a new break in the ankle, an injury that has sidelined him since Game 1 of the AL championship series. He likely will be out until after the All-Star break.
Still, he never wavered in his confidence that he will run ? without a limp ? to the shortstop position that has been his since 1996.
"When you have doubt, that's when you're in trouble. I have been told this bone will heal, and when it heals I'll be ready to go," Jeter said Thursday. "It's frustrating I can't magically make it heal sooner than it's taken."
Jeter was in the dugout for a game for the first time this season when New York played Toronto, getting to know several teammates that weren't with the Yankees when he played in his last spring training game in mid-March.
Kevin Youkilis, among the new Yankees, was out of the lineup for the fifth straight game because of a tight lower back.
"He tried to take some work in the cage," manager Joe Girardi said. "He's just not ready. I thought it would be today. So hopefully it's tomorrow. We'll just go day by day."
Girardi is confident that when Jeter returns, he'll be the same player who has 3,304 hits, including an AL-leading 216 last season.
"He's had a setback here," Girardi said. "We have to deal with it but, hopefully, we get him back and he's the same player he was at the end of last year."
The 13-time All-Star is disappointed he failed in fulfilling his prediction that he would return by opening day. Now the reality is he will not be able to help his team until around mid-July, weeks after he's turned 39 years old.
No. 2 has a date in mind for his return, but he not saying when it is.
"The last timeline I set, I didn't make," Jeter said. "I don't want to disappoint myself or anyone else."
Jeter was always stubborn about injuries, refusing tests and claiming he was well enough to play. He has willed himself onto the field throughout a career in which his 2,531 games at shortstop rank only behind Omar Vizquel (2,709) and Luis Aparicio (2,581).
"I don't talk about injuries," he said. "It's just I think talking about injuries is just making an excuse for yourself. You either play or you don't."
In 2004, he famously dived into the stands to make a catch against the Boston Red Sox and walked off the field bloody and bruised. Yet, he took his position at Shea Stadium the next day.
When he dislocated his shoulder in 2003, he returned almost exactly to the day predicted and played through pain much of the season ? the only one of his 17 previous full seasons that he played less than 130 games.
At 38, he had no such luck. Jeter played for much of last September with a bad bone bruise. It finally gave out against the Detroit Tigers when he lunged for a groundball Oct. 13. A week later he had surgery, and a Christmas party at Yankee Stadium for his Turn 2 Foundation, he vowed to be on the field for the April 1 opener.
But Jeter was slowed by stiffness and soreness during spring training and only played five big league games, three at shortstop. When the pain persisted into April, he went for a new CT scan in Charlotte, N.C., and that test revealed the break.
"When I got it, it wasn't good news," Jeter said. "I thought I would go up there, when I went to see the doc, I thought he would say it was something different. Tape it up. Let's go. But it wasn't the case. It didn't feel too good for quite some time. I'm laughing and smiling and happy that I'm up here. But I'm still upset that I can't play."
For now he will be limited to playing cheerleader and working out until he is given the OK to start his on-field rehabilitation again. Jeter walked without a limp into and out of the news conference, and he wasn't wearing the protective boot he says he has to wear, even though he doesn't think it's necessary.
He'll spend at least the 10-game homestand in New York.
"It's tough to not be around the team," Jeter said.

Hormone Shows Potential as Diabetes Treatment in Mice - Health ...
THURSDAY, April 25 (HealthDay News) ? A hormone that could lead to more effective diabetes treatment has been identified by researchers.
The hormone, called betatrophin, causes mice to produce insulin-secreting pancreatic beta cells at up to 30 times the normal rate. But it only produces insulin when the body needs it, according to the team at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute.
The researchers said their findings offer the potential for the natural regulation of insulin and a significant reduction in diabetes-related complications such as blindness and limb amputation.
The study is published in the April 25 online edition of the journal Cell and in its May 9 print issue.
Although the hormone shows promise in lab mice, much more work is needed before it could be considered as a treatment for diabetes in humans, the researchers noted. Results obtained in animal experiments often aren?t attainable in trials with humans.
?If this could be used in people, it could eventually mean that instead of taking insulin injections three times a day, you might take an injection of this hormone once a week or once a month, or in the best case maybe even once a year,? Doug Melton, co-director of the institute and co-chair of Harvard University?s department of stem cell and regenerative biology, said in a university news release.
About 26 million Americans have type 2 diabetes, which causes people to slowly lose beta cells and the ability to produce sufficient amounts of insulin.
?Our idea here is relatively simple,? Melton said. ?We would provide this hormone, the type 2 diabetic will make more of their own insulin-producing cells, and this will slow down, if not stop, the progression of their diabetes. I?ve never seen any treatment that causes such an enormous leap in beta cell replication.?
Along with its potential for treating type 2 diabetes, betatrophin might also have a role in treating type 1 diabetes, Melton said.
Unlike type 2 diabetes, which is associated with being overweight and sedentary, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs most often in children and young adults.

HTC insists Nokia's injunction won't affect the One's current stock, new mics in the works
In an email to press, HTC took the opportunity to make a few clarifications about the injunction filed by Nokia this week regarding the dual-membrane microphone in the One. The preliminary injunction claims that the high-amplitude mic, which HTC uses in its flagship device, was supposed to be manufactured exclusively for the Finnish company (and currently used in the Lumia 720). If you've been wondering how this particular action would affect sales of the high-end HTC handset, spokespeople assure us that it's business as usual for the company. According to its official statement, the One is not the actual target of any injunction in The Netherlands -- in actuality, the legalities of the matter are apparently only between Nokia and STMicroelectronics, the supplier of the component in question.
HTC tells us that Nokia's attempts to institute a recall of the One failed; since the products were purchased in good faith, the ruling states that HTC can continue to use microphones that are in its inventory. Despite having a history rich in manufacturing delays, we're told that this legal ruling will have no effect on the One's availability. The Taiwanese phone maker plans a transition to "improved microphone designs" as soon as its current stock of STM supplies has been exhausted, a move which HTC claims will be transparent to consumers. Norway wealth fund mulls selling oil firms that work in E.Guinea

OSLO (Reuters) - Norway's sovereign wealth fund is looking into selling off shares in oil firms that work in Equatorial Guinea, where oil revenue does nothing to relieve abject poverty, the fund's ethics council said, a list that includes Exxon Mobil.
The Norwegian Pension Fund Global was Exxon Mobil's tenth-largest shareholder at end-2012 with some 16 billion crowns worth of shares, or a stake of 0.81 percent.
The fund, whose investments totalled $725 billion on Wednesday, invests Norway's revenues from oil and gas production for future generations. Exxon Mobil was its tenth-largest equity holding at end-2012, according to its annual report.
"We are looking into the oil companies in which we hold shares and which are active in Equatorial Guinea," Ola Mestad, the head of the fund's ethics council, said on Wednesday.
"The production of the country's dominant natural resource appears to enrich only the country's elite while the living conditions of the population are amongst the worst in the world," the council said in its annual report.
The fund has frequently excluded companies for what it deems to be unethical behaviour based on the recommendations of its ethics council.
Mestad declined to name the specific companies being considered in the case of Equatorial Guinea or say how long the process could take.
EXXON, MARATHON, HESS
A spokeswoman for Exxon Mobil in Norway confirmed the company was active in Equatorial Guinea and that statements she had made to a local daily newspaper were correct.
"To operate honestly and ethically is one of the most important things that we do," spokeswoman Kristin Kragseth was cited as saying by the Aftenposten on Wednesday.
"Regardless of where we are in the world, it is important to us to maintain high ethical standards, follow rules and regulations and respects local culture. We do that in Equatorial Guinea as we do in Norway and all the other countries we operate in."
Kragseth did not immediately respond to requests for further comment, and U.S. Exxon officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
U.S. energy companies Marathon Oil and Hess Corp also operate fields in Equatorial Guinea. The oil fund owned 0.76 percent of Marathon Oil and 0.69 percent of Hess at the end of 2012, according to Reuters data.
Officials at both Marathon Oil and Hess could not immediately be reached for comment.
Equatorial Guinea is nominally one of Africa's richest countries with a GDP per capita of more than $27,000 per year, according to the World Bank, putting it ahead of Portugal and just below Spain. Even so, much of the 720,000 population lives in deep poverty.
The country was ranked among "the worst of the worst" civil liberty abusers in a 2012 survey by democracy group Freedom House. President Teodor Obiang Nguema has been in power in the tiny central African state for more than three decades, and his son is wanted in both the United States and France on corruption charges.
The Norwegian fund's ethics council makes its recommendations to Norway's finance ministry, which has ultimate responsibility for the fund.
The fund last excluded The Babcock & Wilcox Co. and Jacobs Engineering Group Plc in January, citing their involvement in the production of nuclear weapons.
