MIPCOM: Turkish Drama 'The End' Gets Country's First U.S. Format Deal

In a sign of just how fevered -- and far-ranging -- the search for new scripted series has become, Fox has just inked a deal to acquire re-versioning rights to a drama from Turkey, the latest territory to make its mark on the international TV scene. The deal came to light on the Croisette on the last morning of the four-day Mipcom TV market in Cannes.

The End will be the first Turkish drama series to hit American screens in a deal between Sander Moses Productions and Fox with 20th TV producing. Eccho Rights represents the hit scripted format.

Lined up to work on the show are Peter Horton as director and executive producer, and Michael Cooney as writer.

Fredrik af Malmborg, managing director at Eccho Rights, said that "the success of the ready made and now the way the scripted format is traveling testifies to the great ideas and inventiveness of the script."

Eccho Rights recently sold the Turkish drama as a format to Russia as well as licensing The End as a ready-made to over 40 countries including SVT in Sweden.

This last deal led to the first-ever subtitled Turkish drama to air on Western European screens.

The End comes from Turkish drama producer Ay Yapim and tells the story of a happy couple living in Istanbul. When the plane the husband is traveling on crashes, the wife is sent into a spiral of grief that stops when she finds out he never boarded the plane. She then has to find her way through a web of lies to find her husband.

Japan logs US$1.82b trade deficit for June

TOKYO: Japan logged another trade deficit in June on soaring import costs, reversing a year-earlier surplus although shipments picked up to key export markets including the US, China and Europe.

The $1.82 billion shortfall come a day after Tokyo lifted its view on the state of the world's third-largest economy, using the word "recovery" for the first time in a nearly a year and hinting an end to more than a decade of deflation was near.

The trade data is a key signal for economists trying to pin down whether Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's "Abenomics" programme of big government spending and aggressive monetary easing is rippling through the economy.

On Sunday, Abe's Liberal Democratic Party won upper house elections, giving him more legislative muscle to press on with his bid to fix the economy, which has suffered from years of growth-sapping deflation that crimped private spending and business investment.

The measures have weakened the yen sharply since Abe came to power late last year, a boost for exporters such as Toyota and Sony. The cheaper currency makes exporters more competitive overseas and inflates the value of their repatriated foreign profits.

On Wednesday, Japan's finance ministry said the country logged a June trade deficit of 180.8 billion yen as import costs outpaced gains in exports.

That marked the longest string of monthly shortfalls in more than three decades, the ministry said.

Japan's import costs surged in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear crisis when it shut down its atomic reactors and turned to pricey fossil-fuel alternatives, knocking the nation's already lumbering economy.

For the month, imports climbed 11.8 percent as the weaker yen made incoming shipments more expensive.

Exports meanwhile climbed 7.4 percent to 6.06 trillion yen, growing for the fourth straight month as weak demand in Europe picked up and the value of car shipments to the United States rose.

Shipments to China were up 4.8 percent as the impact of a territorial dispute that erupted last year between Tokyo and Beijing -- which hammered demand for Japanese goods -- appears to have faded.

In April, new leadership at the Bank of Japan -- handpicked by Abe -- vowed to hit a two-percent inflation target within two years in a bid to vanquish deflation, jack up asset purchases including government bonds, and double the money supply.

Earlier this month, the central bank used the word "recover" in reference to the economy for the first time since 2011, pointing to a pick-up in investment as well as consumer and business confidence.

On Tuesday, the Cabinet Office gave its third monthly upgrade, saying: "The economy is picking up steadily and shows some movements on the way to recovery." It is the first time it has used the word in 10 months. Officials added that years of falling prices appeared to be reversing course.

Deflation is bad for the economy because it encourages consumers to put off purchases in the hope of getting them cheaper down the road, which hurts producers.

Official data indicates the efforts are working as consumer prices in May were flat from year-earlier levels, after half a year of declining figures.

Intel, Chandler-Gilbert college support hands-on engineering internships

This summer, 110 Arizona undergraduate students will have the chance to participate in the Intel Ultimate Engineering Experience (I.U.E.E.).

According to the Intel website, a strategy was proposed in 2011 by the High Tech Education Team, a part of the President?s Council on Jobs and Effectiveness, to increase the number of engineering graduates in the U.S. Part of this strategy included a commitment from Intel and other companies to double the number of internships offered to engineering students.

In 2012, Intel introduced the I.U.E.E., a program specifically designed to target students at national universities and community colleges in order to keep them motivated about completing their engineering degrees. This summer the program will be offered over a six-week period at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC), 2626 E. Pecos Road in Chandler. The program is full and applications are no longer being accepted.

Cindy Barnes Pharr, dean of community affairs at CGCC, said the program will provide hands-on technical engineering experience through a variety of technical skill development activities, team-based project work, competitions, professional skill development, networking and social activities.

Specifically, participants will build a robot, develop an app, and act like entrepreneurs to create and develop solutions to improve people?s lives.

?The program is intended to help inspire the next generation of engineers and help them realize that engineering is really boundary-less,? said Cynthia Del Frate, program manager for the I.U.E.E.

Del Frate said students will not only have the opportunity to work with Intel engineers, but also professionals who will help the students develop strong resumes and interviewing skills. This program also gives Intel the opportunity to identify and connect with top local talent, and gives students the opportunity to network.

?A powerful network will get you everywhere, not only for finding a job, but for career growth,? Del Frate added.

The I.U.E.E. is only offered to freshmen and sophomores, but internships with Intel that are open to all students can be found by exploring its traditional internship programs and postings at evtnow.com/5np .

HBT: Freeman bests Puig for All-Star berth

source:

?You love me! You really love me!?

Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves and Steve Delabar of the Toronto Blue Jays were chosen by fans as the winners of the 2013 All-Star Game Final Vote.

I gotta say, I?m rather shocked at the NL result. I woulda thought that Yasiel PuigMania would have carried the day. And that if it didn?t, someone at Major League Baseball would turn this into some Soviet-era election in which the glorious voice of the proletariat cried out for Puig to win despite the longest of odds or something. Guess not.

Not that we should take too much from this. The voting procedures for this were even more gonzo than the regular All-Star voting, with Twitter hashtags counting as votes in the final hours before the polls closed. That, combined with open campaigning made this something less than a scientific referendum.

But it may be a broad referendum on what people want the All-Star Game to be. I feel like a Puig vote is a vote for the All-Star Game as spectacle and?excitement?and what people may want to see, regardless of some measure of merit. I feel like a Freeman vote is one in which people look at overall value (and Freeman, having played all year has added more?aggregate?value to the Braves than Puig has to the Dodgers) and decided to reward a greater body of work over a big splash. Maybe this voting is even too silly to determine that. I don?t know.

But I do know that, barring Puig as an injury replacement in the days leading up to the All-Star game, he?s going to be sitting at home and watching on TV. And Jonathan Papelbon will be happy.

As for Delabar: relief pitcher beats out other relief pitchers and it?s hard for me to work up much emotion of any kind about that. But at least this relief pitcher has a great story, so that?s nice.

Sports Verdict: Which Team Has The Better All-Star Game Roster? AL Vs. NL

By Christian S. Kohl

With the two leagues set to square off in their annual exhibition featuring its greatest stars on July 16th, all eyes will be on Citi Field. With home field advantage during the World Series on the line, the question very simply put is, can the National League maintain its grip on the contest for the fourth straight year?

>>More Sports Verdict Here

Obviously, a lot of variables are at play in a contest of this nature. First and foremost, the competition is an exhibition game, and therefore players will not be operating at full throttle. Safety is still paramount;? therefore, pitchers will be used sparingly, and substitutions will be made generously with an eye toward getting all major leaguers named to the team some action. Second, since this is simply a one game contest, fans know and appreciate that absolutely anything can happen. Either side could readily win, or they could battle to an extra inning draw knotted in a low scoring affair. The wild ride of the game is what makes it so entertaining for fans to watch every summer.

The key matchups early will be the extreme dominance of NL starting pitchers against the absolute firepower of the American League bats. The AL has the muscle on their side with Miguel Cabrera and Chris Davis, both on offensive tears seldom seen in baseball history. Waiting for them will be the likes of Clayton Kershaw and Jeff Locke, who make not just a point, but a career out of refusing to allow opposing batters to dent home plate. If the American League finds a lead early, it will be tough for the National League to regain control of the game. The depth of the American League bats runs deeper then the handful of elite NL starters looking to shut them down.

The depth of the American league starters is also substantial. While fireballers like Justin Verlander may not be leading the league in as many categories this year, the format of the game allows his kind to avoid pacing. He may simply air out all 100 mph of his cannon arm for two innings tops in an attempt to overpower the National League bats. Also, some of the more enigmatic hurlers like the Texas ace Yu Darvish could quite possibly baffle the opposing league who does not get a sufficient opportunity to face him during the regular season.

Lastly, should the AL carry a lead into the late innings, the legend waiting to finish the game is none other than Mariano Rivera. His recovery from the devastating ACL injury last year, over the age of 40, would be previously unthinkable. Even now that it has happened, it is difficult to believe anyone other than Rivera would be capable of it.

The National League has shown a lot of teeth in games the previous few years, so they are most certainly not to be underestimated. But the absolutely monstrous years so far belong primarily to AL players. To that end, expect a slim American League victory to buck the trend of NL wins of late. No matter what happens, it will most certainly be fun and entirely worth enjoying as a midsummer treat.

(AP) ? Country music stars and fans joined together to urge prayers for Randy Travis overnight as he recovered from brain surgery following a stroke at a Texas hospital.

Travis remained in critical condition after surgery Wednesday night to relieve pressure on his brain, publicist Kirt Webster said. The 54-year-old Grammy Award-winning singer had been improving while being treated for heart failure caused by a viral infection when he had the stroke.

Steady concern for Travis, a popular and pivotal figure in country music, turned to active support as stars like Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum and Martina McBride and the Grand Ole Opry used Twitter to join Webster's call for prayers. Hundreds of users reached out using the hashtag PrayforRandy.

"We're all pulling for you Randy," Brad Paisley said via Twitter.

The setback occurred hours after doctors said Travis was showing signs of improvement since the start of treatment Sunday for congestive heart failure.

It was not clear what kind of stroke Travis suffered. The most common type of stroke is caused by a blood clot that travels to the brain. The other kind happens when a blood vessel in the head bursts or leaks. Stroke patients who get treatment quickly are usually given a drug to dissolve the clot that caused the stroke.

Drs. William Gray and Michael Mack of the Baylor Health Care System in Texas described Travis' condition and hospitalization in a video statement earlier Wednesday.

"His condition has stabilized, and he has shown signs of improvement," Mack said in the video. "On behalf of Mr. Travis' family, friends and associates, we would like to express our extreme gratitude for the overwhelming affection and support that Mr. Travis has received."

The "Three Wooden Crosses" singer was in good health until three weeks before he was hospitalized, when he contracted a viral upper respiratory infection, Gray said.

The viral illness led to a weakened heart muscle that eventually worsened into heart failure.

Travis was admitted to Baylor Medical Center McKinney near his home in Tioga, about 60 miles north of Dallas, through the emergency room Sunday. The singer underwent a procedure to have a pump inserted by catheter that helps increase blood flow before being transferred to The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano.

Travis' illness comes as he's been trying to put his life back together following a series of embarrassing public incidents involving alcohol. Travis pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in January following an arrest last year and received two years of probation and a $2,000 fine. He was required to spend at least 30 days at an alcohol treatment facility and complete 100 hours of community service.

He recently made several public appearances, including a spot on the Country Music Association Festival's nightly concert lineup and a poignant performance at George Jones' funeral.

Webster said from the hospital Travis' fiancee Mary Beougher was at his side and that he is surrounded by family and friends, including his brother, Dennis Traywick, and his pastor, Jeff Perry. Kenny Rogers, the Oak Ridge Boys, Chuck Norris and several others have called to check in on Travis.

The North Carolina-born Travis is a traditional country purist known for hits "Forever and Ever, Amen" and "I Told You So." His 1986 Warner Bros. debut album "Storms of Life" sold 4 million copies, and helped return country music to the sound of Hank Williams and George Jones.

"I always feel like he's part of our family, he's in our family," Keith Urban said in an interview Wednesday morning in Nashville. "And I was one of those guys in Australia that bought 'Storms of Life' and became a Randy fan very quickly in late '80s, and I really feel for him right now."

Installing old windows SSD in new build with new windows

Topic title might be a little confusing.
I have already installed a new windows 7 on my new build's SSD.
Now, I'm going to install the old SSD from my previous build (with windows on it).
Will this cause any problems with the current windows installed? Or is it safe to just install the disc and fire it up?
Probably only me overthinking, so might be a stupid question for you windows experts, but I want to be on the safe side, and I hate reinstalling windows.
All I need to do is to access the disc when I'm logged in and delete the old windows files from there right?
I really need my files on the old disc, so I can't format it yet.

Anderson Silva explains awkward staredown at UFC 162 weigh-ins

The weigh-ins for UFC 162 got a little weird. During their post weigh-in face off, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and challenger Chris Weidman smashed their faces into each other until the above picture happened. But Silva said it was just regular promotion of the fight.

"It's normal. It's promotion for the fight," Silva told Fuel TV's Ariel Helwani. "It's a fight. It's normal. It's working. My job."

Silva has gotten close with his opponents during face-offs in the past. Before his second fight with Chael Sonnen, Silva pushed his shoulder into Sonnen's face. So a little face-smashing? It's normal.

Tetra Pak among foreign firms facing probe in China for malpractices

Bombay News.Net Friday 5th July, 2013

China is investigating global packaging giant Tetra Pak for "abusing" its dominant market role, an official said Friday, the latest in a series of probes aimed at foreign companies.

The State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) has launched the nationwide investigation, ChinaNews.com reported on its website citing unidentified sources.

The head of SAIC Zhang Mao gave no specific details of the inquiry, but said it covered 20 provinces and cities

"The administration has filed a case against Tetra Pak on suspicion of abusing its market controlling position," Zhang Mao was quoted as saying at a meeting, according to a transcript posted online.

Tetra Pak China, whose parent is headquartered in Switzerland, confirmed a request for information by the government and said it was cooperating, reported AFP.

Part of the private Tetra Laval group, which is owned by the Swedish Rausing family, Tetra Pak has more than 23,000 employees and its packages are available in 170 countries.

Tetra Pack has had presence in China since 1972 and its clients include China's biggest milk and beverage producers including China Mengniu Dairy Co Ltd, Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Co and Uni-president China Holdings Ltd.

The company has a research centre in Shanghai and packaging material plants in several Chinese cities.

News of the investigation comes within days of media reports that another Chinese government agency has launched an "anti-monopoly" investigation into several foreign baby formula makers over high prices.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the top economic planning agency, is investigating six milk-powder producers including Nestle and Danone, for possible price-fixing and anti-competitive behavior.

It is targeting Nestle unit Wyeth Nutrition, France's Danone, Mead Johnson Nutrition, Abbott Laboratories and Dutch firm Royal FrieslandCampina.

Both Nestle and Danone have responded by announcing plans to cut prices of their products.

Following a 2008 scandal in which tainted baby formula killed six children and sickened more than 300,000, Chinese consumers prefer foreign brand dairy products.

Tetra Pak's products include packaging for milk. The company has supplied Chinese dairy giant Mengniu and participated in a programme to boost sustainable dairy farming in China, company statements showed..

The NDRC also said this week it would investigate 60 pharmaceutical companies over their pricing, including several joint ventures with foreign firms, among them Britain's GlaxoSmithKline.

This undated photo provided by the St. Andrews Historic Seaport and Commercial Marina in Panama City, Fla., shows American David Dyche, skipper of the 70-foot (21-meter) vessel Nina.

AP

The search for six Americans and one British man lost in the seas between New Zealand and Australia was called off Friday after extensive aerial searches failed to turn up any sign of the 85-year-old wooden sailing boat they were traveling on.

Officials in New Zealand said the last known communication from the Nina's crew came on June 4 in the form of an undelivered text message stating that the boat's sails had been shredded in a storm.

Authorities now believe that the boat likely sank that day.

The Associated Press says the Americans included David Dyche, 58; his wife Rosemary, 60; their son David, 17; and their friend Evi Nemeth, 73.

A BBC report on the search described them as seasoned sailors:

"The Dyche family were said to be experienced sailors who had been sailing around the world for several years."

The passage from New Zealand to Australia was set to be the family's last big trip together before the younger Dyche headed back to the United States to start college, according to an earlier report in The Sydney Morning Herald. It also noted that their classic sailboat had "won the famous British Isles Fastnet race in 1928."

South American leaders demand apology in plane row

COCHABAMBA, Bolivia (AP) ? South America's leftist leaders rallied to support Bolivian President Evo Morales after his plane was rerouted amid suspicions that NSA leaker Edward Snowden was on board and they demanded an apology from France, Italy, Portugal and Spain.

Spain's foreign minister insisted Friday that no apology was needed, insisting that Spanish airspace was never closed to Morales.

The presidents of Argentina, Ecuador, Suriname, Venezuela and Uruguay joined Morales in the Bolivian city of Cochabamba late Thursday to denounce the treatment of Morales, who warned that he would close the U.S. Embassy in Bolivia if necessary.

Morales again blamed Washington for pressuring European countries to refuse to allow his plane to fly through their airspace on Tuesday, forcing it to land in Vienna, Austria, in what he called a violation of international law. He had been returning from a summit in Russia during which he had suggested he would be willing to consider a request from Snowden for asylum.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said Friday that his nation and other European countries were told Snowden was aboard the Bolivian presidential plane. He did not say who supplied the information and declined to say whether he had been in contact with the United States.

Garcia-Margallo insisted, however, that Spain did not prevent Morales' plane from landing in its territory.

He said Bolivian Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca gave him written assurances that Snowden was not on the plane.

"Spain does not have to make any apology," he told public Television Espanola. "The airspace was never closed."

Latin American leaders were outraged by the incident, calling it a violation of national sovereignty and a slap in the face for a region that has suffered through humiliations by Europe and several U.S.-backed military coups.

"United we will defeat American imperialism. We met with the leaders of my party and they asked us for several measures and if necessary, we will close the embassy of the United States," Morales said in the city where he started his political career as a leader of coca leaf farmers. "We do not need the embassy of the United States."

Morales' government has had a conflictive relationship with Washington.

It expelled the U.S. ambassador and agents of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in 2008 for allegedly inciting the opposition. The Andean nation restored full diplomatic ties with the U.S. in 2011. But relations soured again amid mutual distrust on drug war politics and hit an especially low point after Secretary of State John Kerry referred to the Western Hemisphere as Washington's "backyard" in April 2013.

Morales expelled the U.S. Agency for International Development in May for allegedly seeking to undermine his government.

In a joint statement read after the summit, the presidents also said they would back Bolivia's official complaint with the U.N. Human Rights Commission

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said that he and other leaders were offering full support to Morales following the rerouting of the plane, calling it an aggression against the Americas.

"We're not going to accept that in the 21st century there's first, second and third rate countries," Correa said.

"The leaders and authorities in Europe have to take a lesson in history and understand that we're not 500 years behind. This Latin America of the 21st century is independent, dignified and sovereign."

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro protested alleged attempts by Spanish officials to search the Bolivian presidential plane and accused the CIA of encouraging several European countries to deny the presidential plane their airspace.

"A minster of one of those European governments told me personally that it was the CIA who gave the order to the aeronautical authorities, the one who gave the alert that Snowden was on the plane," he said at a rally at a sports arena ahead of the summit. "The CIA is more powerful that governments."

Maduro also said that the U.S. was applying strong pressure to countries in the region to avoid asylum for Snowden.

He said Kerry himself had called Venezuela's foreign ministry to block what Maduro described as "humanitarian aid for this youth of 29 years who has made incredible revelations."

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez said Latin Americans treasured freedom after fighting for their independence from Europe in the 19th century and then surviving Washington's 20th-century history of backing repressive regimes in the Americas.

She then demanded an apology for the plane ordeal.

"I'm asking those who violated the law in calm but serious manner, to take responsibility for the errors made, it's the least they can do," Fernandez said. "To apologize for once in their life, to say they're sorry for what they've done."

Morales has said that while the plane was parked in Vienna, the Spanish ambassador to Austria arrived with two embassy personnel and they asked to search the plane. He said he denied them permission.

Morales received a hero's welcome in an airport in the Bolivian capital of La Paz late Wednesday night. His return followed the dramatic, unplanned 14-hour layover in Vienna.

Ahead of the meeting, Morales said that his ordeal was part of a plot by the U.S. to intimidate him and other Latin American leaders and urged European nations to "free themselves" from the U.S.

France sent an apology to the Bolivian government. But Morales said "apologies are not enough because the stance is that international treaties must be respected."

Amid the tensions, the U.S. embassy in La Paz cancelled Independence Day celebrations scheduled for Thursday. In the eastern city of Santa Cruz, Bolivian government sympathizers painted protest slogans on the doors of the American consulate.

Morales said he never saw Snowden when he was in Russia, and that Bolivia had not received a formal request for asylum for him.

Bolivia has said that it will summon the French and Italian ambassadors and the Portuguese consul to demand explanations.

Despite the complaints, there were no signs that Latin America leaders were moving to bring Snowden to the region that had been seen as the most likely to grant him asylum.

Although Latin American presidents sympathized with Morales and condemned his ordeal, several key regional leaders missed the summit.

Brazil was represented at the meeting by President Dilma Rousseff's top international adviser but Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota missed the summit because he is attending meetings in Europe.

The presidents of Colombia, Chile and Peru, who have strong ties to the U.S., did not attend.

It's still unclear whether European countries did block the plane and, if so, why. French, Spanish and Portuguese officials have all said the plane was allowed to cross their territory.

The emergency stop in Austria may have been caused by a row over where the plane could refuel and whether European authorities could inspect it for signs of Snowden.

The U.S. has declined to comment on whether it was involved in any decision to close European airspace, saying only that "US officials have been in touch with a broad range of countries over the course of the last 10 days," about the Snowden case.

"The message has been communicated both publicly and privately," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Wednesday. "He should be returned to the United States."

Snowden remains out of public view, believed to be stuck in a Moscow airport transit area, seeking asylum from one of more than a dozen countries.

BBC to broadcast Wimbledon final and semi-final matches in 3D

Image

Though ESPN 3D's imminent demise might be evidence to some that 3D TV isn't exactly killing it, BBC has confirmed that it will cover Wimbledon again this year with that extra dimension. In particular, it will broadcast selected matches, including the men's and women's finals and semi-finals, in free-to-air 3D for those with the Red Button service and supported sets. Wimbledon marked its first-ever 3D broadcast two years ago, and the BBC is also experimenting with 4K coverage this year with Sony, albeit exclusively at a live spectator "experience zone" on the finely manicured grounds. The network also said it would up its live streams from six to ten to go with its YouTube coverage -- meaning UKers who miss a single grunt will have only themselves to blame.
