Symptoms of Skin Cancer

Recognizing the Symptoms of Skin Cancer

As warmer spring approaches, the sun will start to peek out from behind the clouds a little bit more and while there?s nothing wrong with enjoying a little sunlight, excessive exposure to the sun can have detrimental effects on our skin.

Unfortunately, when we expose ourselves to the sun, we are also potentially exposing ourselves to higher levels of UV rays that increase the chances of developing skin cancer. Like many things in life, when it comes to sunshine, too much of a good thing can be harmful. The dose is the difference between soaking up the sun and burning.

If skin cancer is to be treated effectively, it needs to be detected as soon as possible so that treatment can begin earlier and the chances of killing the cancer increase. Educate yourself on the symptoms of skin cancer so that you can be prepared to detect it. There are 3 different main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. The symptoms of skin cancer can differ depending on what type you may have contracted.Basal Cell Carcinoma

Symptoms of basal cell carcinoma are usually detected on the face, ears and scalp. You may notice a pearly or waxy bump, or a flat, skin-colored or brown scar.

Symptoms of squamous cell carcinoma may appear on the face, lips, ears or hands. Squamous cell carcinoma looks like firm red nodules on the skin or scaly, crusty flat lesions.

Lastly, signs of melanoma can occur anywhere on the body, even on places that weren?t exposed to the sun. Melanoma can manifest as large brown spots with darker speckles, moles that changes size, color, feel and possibly bleed, small lesions with rough borders that are red, white, blue, or blue-black, or dark lesions on the palms of your hands, the soles of your feet, your fingertips or toes.

The symptoms of skin cancer are not too difficult to miss. If you suspect that you might have skin cancer, it is important to make an appointment with a doctor as soon as possible. Remember, not all skin changes are indicative of skin cancer but if you notice anything irregular about your skin that is troublesome, it is best to get a professional opinion to determine whether skin cancer is possibly the cause, especially if you believe that you have been exposed to UV rays over time. Be informed about the symptoms of skin cancer and you will be prepared to take action in time if necessary.
