The Guess Who still delivers the hits

?

With the promise of another British Invasion coming to America, it was a clever marketing scheme that initially gave The Guess Who their initial commercial success. The group?s first record, Shakin? All Over, was released in a plain white record jacket with only the words ?Guess Who?? printed on the cover, capturing the curiosity of rock n? roll music lovers in the states. The album went on to sell two million copies and the band immediately trademarked the name and began pumping out hit after hit.
The Guess Who will be performing a number of those hits on June 8 when they visit the Mt. Laurel Pocono Mountains Performing Arts Center in Tamiment.
Considered Canada?s first international rock superstars, the original line-up included members Randy Bachman (guitar), Jim Kale (bass) Garry Peterson (drums) and frontman Chad Allen. Their first number one single in the U.S., ?American Woman,? ousted a little band from Liverpool named The Beatles out of the top spot in 1970 and the B-side of the record, ?No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature,? also went on to claim the top spot on charts (a feat only matched by The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Elvis).
Over the next few years the group continued to pump out well known singles like ?No Time? and ?Share The Land,? just a few of the group?s 14 Top 40 hits.
Although membership in the group has changed throughout the years, they perform behind original members Jim Kale (bass and vocals) and Garry Peterson (drums and vocals) with current members Derek Sharp (vocals and guitars), Leonard Shaw (keyboards, flute, sax and vocals) and Laurie MacKenzie (guitars and vocals).
?The original band is something that can never be duplicated again, as far as creating at that young age where everything is possible and nothing is impossible in life,? said Garry Peterson. ?This is probably the best configuration of band members both personality wise and certainly musical wise. This is the best musical aggregation we have ever had.?
The Guess Who will be performing at least two new songs during their Mt. Laurel performance, which is part of ?a continuous tour.?
?Entertaining people is the drug; it?s the thrill,? Peterson said. ?We take people on a journey. It?s art and everybody looks at art differently. The beauty is in the eye of the beholder.?
