Overcoming the Fear of Public Speaking

The fear of public speaking is one of the most debilitating fears that we have and it tops many peoples? list as the greatest fear of all time! Yet, with a few simple public speaking tips, that overwhelming fear can be controlled or even eradicated.

When the fear takes hold, we start to think all manner of scenarios. It is important, therefore to realise that the audience is on your side and they want you to do well, even if only so that they hear a good speech. Another point to bare in mind is the classic public speaking myth, ?They know you?re afraid?; they don?t! This is a common misconception, for the audience has a different perspective than you and your fear is making everything seem bigger.

Your mental approach is vital and what you tell yourself is often more important than what you tell your audience. Visualize yourself succeeding, visualize your self confidence and above all, turn off the negative inner dialogue! Give yourself a new and positive dialogue where you constantly remind your self of your confidence and success. You can also use positive affirmations as a pre-speech warm up such as, ?I am confident and I know my subject? or other similar ideas.

At a physical level you can stretch before public speaking, have a quiet meditation or simply engage in slow and deep breathing exercises. This can help to calm your mind and thus your body.

Public speaking is a terrifying thought for many, so why not indulge and actually imagine the worse that could happen. Take this thought to the utter extreme and then stop to think of the likelihood of all that happening. This is you facing your public speaking fear face on and then observing how we all create worse-case scenarios because of habit. Knowing that the worse won?t happen is a great fear reducer.

Of course, looking nervous will make you even more nervous. Use card for your notes rather than paper, as this will reduce obvious hand shaking. Don?t take out a large handkerchief and rub your face down, just dab at sweat calmly. If you notice yourself fidgeting then just stop an deliberately don?t move! Combined with a deep breath, this can calm your entire system. Then move to another position calmly.

Public speaking is nothing to be afraid of and in fact it is the thought of public speaking that causes the fear, not the actual speaking itself. Do your research, practice your speech, use a positive inner dialogue and follow the tip above; then wait for the standing ovation!
