The iPhone 5... Still Interested?

An upgraded camera may not seem like just cause to shell out cash or ink another two-year plan agreement, but this perception completely underestimates the devotion (addiction) of iPhone users (think white iPhone). Many of us are dorks, and a new iPhone will fulfill the inner nerdiness we (yes, the royal "we") need to feel complete.

Rumors have been filtering in regarding the iPhone 5, shaping expectations. The most interesting tidbit is that it may be called the "iPhone 4s," which suggests it will be very similar to the iPhone 4. This is not a big surprise, although it may upset online retailers who have been pimping the "iPhone 5" keyword.

Ahead of the iPhone 4's release, many people were calling it the "iPhone 4G." I spoke to people at AT&T (NYSE: T) and others who claimed to know what was going on, and none of them said it was going to be named "iPhone 4." Props to Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) for keeping it under wraps, because if nothing else, search engine optimization (SEO) junkies deserve to be messed with.

Interestingly, many wholesalers in China, Hong Kong or wherever call the iPhone 4 parts "iPhone 4G" parts. My best guess is that they named everything when they got the iPhone 4 parts but before they knew its official name. So congrats to Apple for making things difficult for everyone -- all in the name of promotion.

Doesn't Take Much

The next iPhone will be a typical upgrade rather than a game changer. Apple is going with an obvious upgrade from a 5-megapixel camera to an 8 megapixels. Apple likes to concede certain features on its products and with no good reason other than it can.

The HTC Evo and several other phones have a better camera but for many it was not a deal breaker. It's like the original iPad, which did not even have a camera. It could be argued that Apple was keeping costs down, but that is not believable. People bought it anyway, and when the iPad 2 came out with a camera, those same people felt inclined to upgrade.

Can't Get Enough

The best part of the upgraded iPhone 4s will be the inclusion of the iPad 2 1-GHz A5 dual core processor. Upgraded Ram is valued by everyone, and 64 GB of memory is needed for some data hoarders.

For those who use other carriers, the new iPhone brings interest because they won't need to use unlocked iPhones anymore. Sprint (NYSE: S) and T-Mobile users are the folks who get to be the most excited. Additional carriers will be a welcome addition, but my guess is the iPhone will perform best with AT&T for the foreseeable future.

August/September/October looks to be the release-date zone. So start saving or making your food stamps last longer -- it's almost time to invest in the next great American toy, distraction and cool thing.
