The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck and is responsible for producing hormones that affect metabolism, energy levels, body temperature and temperament. When the thyroid gland is out of balance either by producing too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) or too little (hypothyroidism), we can gain or lose excessive weight, feel abnormally hot or cold, or act unusually listless or agitated for no other apparent reasons.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, thyroid disease has several causes, including, but not limited to, Hashimoto?s disease (an auto-immune disorder), inflammation of the thyroid gland, a defect present at birth, radiation treatment, partial or complete removal of the thyroid gland and the effects of taking certain medications.
Maintaining a healthy thyroid gland is important for overall health and wellness. Of course, while it is crucial to see your doctor if you suspect thyroid trouble, there are a few preventative measures you can do to take care.
When any gland or organ in the body is stagnant due to inactivity or reduction in blood flow, problems can ensue. The combination of Bridge Pose and Fish Pose assists in flushing the thyroid gland with fresh blood, nutrients and oxygen.
Bridge Pose
Lie on your back with both knees bent, feet hip width apart. Make sure the backs of your heels are just barely within reach of both hands. Raise your hips to a comfortable height toward the ceiling while pressing down gently through both feet. Lengthen your tailbone toward the backs of your calves to minimize excessive arching along your lower back, and keep your head straight. Take up to 10 deep breaths while holding the pose. Roll down slowly and rest.
Fish Pose
Lie on your back with both arms by your sides. Slide your hands under your hips with palms facing down, both arms and legs straight. Prop up onto your elbows while lifting your head and chest as if to peek at your toes. Lift your chest, arch your head back and place the crown of your head gently onto the floor. Hold for up to 5 deep breaths, feeling a stretch across the front of your neck. To come out of the pose, lift your head up, place the back of it down and release your arms from underneath your hips.
By practicing Bridge Pose followed by Fish Pose you will stimulate, flush and refresh your thyroid gland, however, make sure you check with your doctor first if you are experiencing thyroid problems.
