Given all the hype surrounding the art of feng shui, it?s easy to see how the practice could be dismissed as an irrelevant New Age fad, but the fact is that it?s very relevant in design, and if it?s a fad it?s probably the longest-lasting one in history.
Feng shui (pronounced fung shway) has been around for about 6,000 years and was first practiced by the Chinese in the Neolithic Era. There?s a lot of history surrounding the art, but its fundamental purpose can be described as an effort to bring human existence into balance with everything else ? within the home as well as the universe.
Below are a few feng shui tips that can quickly and easily improve the look and feel of your home.
- 1.?????? Clear the clutter.
A big part of feng shui is the removal of unnecessary items. This has spiritual implications for the dedicated, but for the layperson it means getting rid of old magazines, junk mail, trash and other debris, and basically just cleaning things up. The goal: Love everything in your space.
- 2.????? Enhance the air. ??
Good airflow is said to be wonderful for your qi, and it also happens to be very healthy. Improve air quality by introducing plants into the space as well as making it easier to keep windows open so air can circulate. The goal: Breathe more fresh, clean air in your home.
- 3.????? Embrace your favorite colors. ?
It?s a fact that different colors make us feel different things. Feng shui defines colors in specific ways (i.e. reds, oranges and yellows signify passion and energy), but the important thing is to focus on what these colors say to you and then using them to amplify that emotion in your home. The goal: Be happy with what you see and how you express yourself.
- 4.????? Invite the light.
Natural light can improve your mood and even delivers vitamins to your body, so letting it into the home is essential. Spaces without natural light can be enhanced with brighter colors (see above) and full-spectrum bulbs that replicate natural light. The goal: Bring the sun and its healthful benefits into your home.
Good feng shui, then as now, is thought to enhance qi (life energy) and is accomplished by removing unnecessary clutter and orienting objects in a way that improves the ?flow? of a living space. That, of course, is the point at which mysticism and functionality merge.
Regardless of whether you believe in qi, the principles of feng shui can be used to create a more comfortable place to live. There are countless ties between the practice and things like astronomy and the physical sciences, but you don?t have to study it to reap the rewards of the design concepts.
