We are either getting smarter about relationships or more commitment phobic.
Or maybe both.
Studies show that couples today are choosing to have ?stayover? relationships ? that is, spend three or more nights together a week, without living together, and are pushing back getting married.
If the relationship doesn?t work out, no one has to move out and they can get back to business as usual.
On one hand, there is no mess to clean up, if there is a break up;
on the other, there is no real commitment here.
By living together, a couple can really learn about themselves and their partner;
and it also presents an opportunity for personal growth.
It?s the best way to see if you want to take it to the next step and get married.
It certainly worked for Prince William and Kate.
What is different about today?s generation, is the incredible need for independence and women?s desire for career before (and sometimes over) marriage and motherhood.
There is less of an impetus to get married for young adults;
and when statistics show that almost 50% of marriages end in divorce, well, who can blame them for not trying?
Unfortunately, by only dipping your toe in the water, you never really know what the water feels like;
and by only dating and having ?stayovers?? 3- 4 days a week, you don?t really get to know your partner as best? as possible.
Committing to a relationship can be really scary -
but it is also extremely liberating.
C?mon.
Jump in.
The water?s fine.
