SEOUL, South Korea ? North Korea is threatening to bolster its nuclear arsenal to cope with the start of annual U.S.-South Korean military drills that Pyongyang calls a rehearsal for invasion.
The North's Foreign Ministry issued the warning Wednesday. It says the drills are extremely provocative and undermining recent attempts to promote peace on the Korean peninsula.
The ministry says the North should bolster its nuclear deterrent for self-defense to cope with the drills.
The statement was carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.
Diplomats from the United States and the two Koreas have recently held tentative talks meant to restart long-stalled negotiations to persuade the North to give up its nuclear ambitions.
