Japan logs US$1.82b trade deficit for June

TOKYO: Japan logged another trade deficit in June on soaring import costs, reversing a year-earlier surplus although shipments picked up to key export markets including the US, China and Europe.

The $1.82 billion shortfall come a day after Tokyo lifted its view on the state of the world's third-largest economy, using the word "recovery" for the first time in a nearly a year and hinting an end to more than a decade of deflation was near.

The trade data is a key signal for economists trying to pin down whether Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's "Abenomics" programme of big government spending and aggressive monetary easing is rippling through the economy.

On Sunday, Abe's Liberal Democratic Party won upper house elections, giving him more legislative muscle to press on with his bid to fix the economy, which has suffered from years of growth-sapping deflation that crimped private spending and business investment.

The measures have weakened the yen sharply since Abe came to power late last year, a boost for exporters such as Toyota and Sony. The cheaper currency makes exporters more competitive overseas and inflates the value of their repatriated foreign profits.

On Wednesday, Japan's finance ministry said the country logged a June trade deficit of 180.8 billion yen as import costs outpaced gains in exports.

That marked the longest string of monthly shortfalls in more than three decades, the ministry said.

Japan's import costs surged in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear crisis when it shut down its atomic reactors and turned to pricey fossil-fuel alternatives, knocking the nation's already lumbering economy.

For the month, imports climbed 11.8 percent as the weaker yen made incoming shipments more expensive.

Exports meanwhile climbed 7.4 percent to 6.06 trillion yen, growing for the fourth straight month as weak demand in Europe picked up and the value of car shipments to the United States rose.

Shipments to China were up 4.8 percent as the impact of a territorial dispute that erupted last year between Tokyo and Beijing -- which hammered demand for Japanese goods -- appears to have faded.

In April, new leadership at the Bank of Japan -- handpicked by Abe -- vowed to hit a two-percent inflation target within two years in a bid to vanquish deflation, jack up asset purchases including government bonds, and double the money supply.

Earlier this month, the central bank used the word "recover" in reference to the economy for the first time since 2011, pointing to a pick-up in investment as well as consumer and business confidence.

On Tuesday, the Cabinet Office gave its third monthly upgrade, saying: "The economy is picking up steadily and shows some movements on the way to recovery." It is the first time it has used the word in 10 months. Officials added that years of falling prices appeared to be reversing course.

Deflation is bad for the economy because it encourages consumers to put off purchases in the hope of getting them cheaper down the road, which hurts producers.

Official data indicates the efforts are working as consumer prices in May were flat from year-earlier levels, after half a year of declining figures.

Intel, Chandler-Gilbert college support hands-on engineering internships

This summer, 110 Arizona undergraduate students will have the chance to participate in the Intel Ultimate Engineering Experience (I.U.E.E.).

According to the Intel website, a strategy was proposed in 2011 by the High Tech Education Team, a part of the President?s Council on Jobs and Effectiveness, to increase the number of engineering graduates in the U.S. Part of this strategy included a commitment from Intel and other companies to double the number of internships offered to engineering students.

In 2012, Intel introduced the I.U.E.E., a program specifically designed to target students at national universities and community colleges in order to keep them motivated about completing their engineering degrees. This summer the program will be offered over a six-week period at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC), 2626 E. Pecos Road in Chandler. The program is full and applications are no longer being accepted.

Cindy Barnes Pharr, dean of community affairs at CGCC, said the program will provide hands-on technical engineering experience through a variety of technical skill development activities, team-based project work, competitions, professional skill development, networking and social activities.

Specifically, participants will build a robot, develop an app, and act like entrepreneurs to create and develop solutions to improve people?s lives.

?The program is intended to help inspire the next generation of engineers and help them realize that engineering is really boundary-less,? said Cynthia Del Frate, program manager for the I.U.E.E.

Del Frate said students will not only have the opportunity to work with Intel engineers, but also professionals who will help the students develop strong resumes and interviewing skills. This program also gives Intel the opportunity to identify and connect with top local talent, and gives students the opportunity to network.

?A powerful network will get you everywhere, not only for finding a job, but for career growth,? Del Frate added.

The I.U.E.E. is only offered to freshmen and sophomores, but internships with Intel that are open to all students can be found by exploring its traditional internship programs and postings at evtnow.com/5np .

HBT: Freeman bests Puig for All-Star berth

source:

?You love me! You really love me!?

Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves and Steve Delabar of the Toronto Blue Jays were chosen by fans as the winners of the 2013 All-Star Game Final Vote.

I gotta say, I?m rather shocked at the NL result. I woulda thought that Yasiel PuigMania would have carried the day. And that if it didn?t, someone at Major League Baseball would turn this into some Soviet-era election in which the glorious voice of the proletariat cried out for Puig to win despite the longest of odds or something. Guess not.

Not that we should take too much from this. The voting procedures for this were even more gonzo than the regular All-Star voting, with Twitter hashtags counting as votes in the final hours before the polls closed. That, combined with open campaigning made this something less than a scientific referendum.

But it may be a broad referendum on what people want the All-Star Game to be. I feel like a Puig vote is a vote for the All-Star Game as spectacle and?excitement?and what people may want to see, regardless of some measure of merit. I feel like a Freeman vote is one in which people look at overall value (and Freeman, having played all year has added more?aggregate?value to the Braves than Puig has to the Dodgers) and decided to reward a greater body of work over a big splash. Maybe this voting is even too silly to determine that. I don?t know.

But I do know that, barring Puig as an injury replacement in the days leading up to the All-Star game, he?s going to be sitting at home and watching on TV. And Jonathan Papelbon will be happy.

As for Delabar: relief pitcher beats out other relief pitchers and it?s hard for me to work up much emotion of any kind about that. But at least this relief pitcher has a great story, so that?s nice.
