This Happened: Apple?s Siri Tells 12-Year-Old Boy To Shut The F*** Up

Curious 12-year-old Charlie Le Quesne just innocently wanted to know how many people there were in the world when he happened to be chewed out profanely by the iPhone app Siri in a Tesco ?a British superstore, similar to Target? located in Coventry. ?Shut the fuck up, you ugly twat!? exclaimed the foul-mouthed app.

Shocked by the iPhone?s X-rated response, Charlie?s mother, Kim, asked the phone the same question and received the same obscene reply.

According to the Sun?s Andrew Parker:

?I asked for the manager and after staff heard it they agreed to unplug it.?

Apologetic staff at Tesco in Coventry told Kim pranksters had tampered with the phone?s set-up instructions.

The Siri system refers to the phone?s user by name ? using information stored in its contacts system. The jokers had entered the rude seven-word phrase as the user?s name ? so the phone blurted it out when it answered a question.

But nursery worker Kim, 39, said: ?I couldn?t see the funny side.?

Tesco said: ?We have launched an investigation. The handset will be going back to Apple for diagnostic tests.?

Mitt Romney: Winning, One Slogan at a Time (Time.com)

As Mitt Romney enters the final stretch in Iowa, poll numbers rising, crowds appearing, the inevitability beginning to sink in, his message is honed down, lean and mean, with declarative sentences that slice the air with the flashy precision of a fruit ninja. "I love this country," he says, as if this sets him apart. Then he adds, "I don't want America to turn into Europe."

No, Romney continues, "I want to make America work again." Then he elaborates. "I want to get America working again for the middle class." Those are subtle digs at the sitting President. But Romney is not trying to be subtle. "I'm frightened that we have a President that doesn't understand America," he says in Clinton, Iowa, on Wednesday afternoon. "He's had his moment. Now is our time." And then: "He will transform America. I will restore America." (Watch TIME's video "Mark Halperin Interviews Mitt Romney.")

Everything Romney says is built for repetition, to be quoted in newspapers, in televised soundbites and seared into the national psyche. Everything is a catchphrase, a bumper sticker waiting to be printed. The lines make tweets feel long. "I don't want class warfare to poison the American spirit," he continues. He says Obama wants an "entitlement society" and Romney wants an "opportunity society." He adds, "I don't want to substitute envy for ambition."

In Clinton, Muscatine and North Liberty, the crowds are not huge -- in the low hundreds -- but they overflow the small spaces Romney has booked for the events. On his second ride in the presidential campaign rodeo, the candidate no longer has to worry about introducing himself. He no longer bothers to assure voters that he is more conservative than they suspect on issues like guns, abortion and gay rights. He is a singularly focused, Obama-destroying machine. "People in Washington think it's government that makes us strong," he says. "It's free people pursuing our dreams that makes us great."

Romney's is an effective presentation, convincing in its single-minded message. The crowds eat it up. These people want what he is promising, after all: to get rid of the sitting President. And no other candidate has yet shown that he or she can compete with Romney's general election competitiveness. They want to win. Romney seems to have Obama's number. "Democrats are scared," says Illinois Rep. Aaron Schock, who introduces Romney at campaign events.

But the very effectiveness of Romney's presentation make the awkward moments that much more striking. He greets a group of seniors eating an Italian lunch in Clinton with the phrases, "Ooh, dinner looks good. I like the pizza. I like the pizza." Or when he opens a town hall at a factory in North Liberty with a comment on the platform he is standing on. "This thing I am standing on is one of the pieces of machinery, a tool, that helps them make the various products they make out of various forms of plastic," he says. When someone in the audience mentions Denver Broncos' quarterback Tim Tebow's religious displays, Romney responds earnestly, "I appreciate people who are willing to stand up for their differences." (Read "Mitt Romney: A Candidate's Rhetorical Evolution.")

And then there is his talk about song. He praises God Bless America. Discusses the national anthem. Repeats the lesser known verses of America the Beautiful, which he calls, "Oh, Beautiful for Spacious skies." "Does corn qualify as amber waves of grain?" he asks off the cuff. "Not really. But you get the point."

The audience does. This is an Obama toppler before them. He talks of an epic battle for the "core" of the country. "I want America to be more like America, again," he declares. And the voters are coming around, he predicts, in Iowa, in New Hampshire, in swing states across the country. Obama's days are numbered, Romney assures the crowds: "They are going to send him back to the private sector where he finally deserves to go."

Put it on a card. Hang it on your wall. Repeat every night before bedtime. This presidency is going to end. Romney's slogans will make it so.

Jonathan Ive Knighthood: Apple's Design Chief Awarded Knighthood In United Kingdom

iPhone. iPad. iKnight.

Jonathan Ive, Apple's head of design, has been honored with a knighthood in the United Kingdom.

Per BBC News, Ive, a native of Chingford, was awarded with the title Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE).

The design guru worked closely with the late Steve Jobs and played a key role in the creation of such iconic Apple products as the iMac, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad.

As the San Jose Mercury News reports, Ive released a statement responding to the knighthood announcement:

"I am keenly aware that I benefit from a wonderful tradition in the UK of designing and making,'' Ive, 44, said in a statement. "To be recognized with this honour is absolutely thrilling and I am both humbled and sincerely grateful. I discovered at an early age that all I've ever wanted to do is design. I feel enormously fortunate that I continue to be able to design and make products with a truly remarkable group of people here at Apple."

Earlier this year, the Associated Press reported on Ive's background:

Ive started out far from Apple Inc.'s Cupertino headquarters. He grew up outside London and studied design at Newcastle Polytechnic (now Northumbria University) in Newcastle, England. After finishing school, he co-founded a London-based design company called Tangerine. There, he designed a range of products including combs and power tools. It was through Tangerine that he first got to work with Apple.

In 1992, while Jobs was still in the midst of a 12-year exile from Apple, the company's design chief at the time, Robert Brunner, hired Ive as a senior designer. Thomas Meyerhoffer, who worked under Ive at Apple in the `90s, believes Ive came because he understood Apple was different from other computer companies.

Bloomberg Businessweek, profiling Ive in 2006, explained that he became head of Apple's design team in 1996. Upon Steve Jobs' 1997 return to Apple, the late CEO recognized Ive's incredible talents. Jobs, quoted by biographer Walter Isaacson, explained that he set up a structure at Apple in which "There's no one who can tell him [Ive] what to do." As AppleInsider reports, Jobs viewed Ive as his "spiritual partner" at Apple.

Ive's designs can be found on the desks and in the pockets of millions of people. In addition, the Museum of Modern Art in New York houses six classic products designed by Ive: the G4 Cube Computer, the G4 Cube Speakers, the Harman Kardon iSub, the iBook, the iMac G4 Desktop and the original iPod. His massive impact on the design of technology was recognized by FORTUNE magazine in 2010 when the publication named Ive the Smartest Designer in Tech.

WWE Bring it Back!: WWE Wrestling Buddies

Disappointed by the hand-knit sweater you unwrapped Christmas morning? Candy canes not quite packing that festive punch? Perhaps it?s time to ring in the New Year properly, and ask for the return of one of the greatest squared circle toys of all time: WWE Wrestling Buddies!

Amidst the explosive mayhem of the ?80s and early ?90s, WWE Wrestling Buddies allowed WWE Universe members of all ages to lay the smackdown and find comfort, all at the same time. These cuddly bone-crushers gave new meaning to the term ?pillow fight" ? with likenesses of such classic Superstars as The Ultimate Warrior, Randy ?Macho Man? Savage, The Million Dollar Man, Jake ?The Snake? Roberts, Big Boss Man, The Road Warriors and Hulk Hogan.

Never soft in the middle, WWE Wrestling Buddies could insight riotous behavior in any home arena. This was evident by their wacky commercials, in which their seemingly simple showdowns, started by kids, would quickly pull in dad or even a local law enofrcement officer into the bedlam.

Part pillow, part canvas competitor, WWE Wrestling Buddies transcended the WWE Universe into mainstream popularity culture. In fact, in 2011, "Time" magazine?s Time.com included them in its list of ?All-Time 100 Greatest Toys? ? a ranking of the top toys from 1920 ? 2010.

Imagine the impact of welcoming the next generation of pint-sized grapplers that might include The Second City ?Snuggler? CM Punk, "Almohada" Del Rio or the The World?s Strongest ?Pillow-Man? Mark Henry into your personal toy chest.

Caucuses looming, Paul to spend weekend in Texas (AP)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ? Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is at or near the top of polls in Iowa, where he's drawing big crowds and has an enviable campaign organization. But with Iowa's caucuses on Tuesday, the Texas congressman plans to head home for the weekend, the latest evidence of an unconventional approach to winning the GOP nomination.

From his low-tech events and his relatively small entourage to his reluctance to glad-hand voters, the 76-year-old Paul has stubbornly adhered to his own campaign playbook with seemingly little regard for the calendar or the shifting dynamics of the GOP field.

The rest of the contenders braced for a grueling weekend of campaign events. Paul, however, planned to fly home late Friday night to spend the weekend with his wife, Carol. He was set to appear on several Sunday morning talk shows from Texas, and was scheduled to return to Iowa by Monday morning for a "whistle-stop" campaign tour with his son, Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican.

"He's a family man and he wants to spend time with his family," said Paul's Iowa campaign chairman, Drew Ivers.

Leaving Iowa just three days before the kickoff nominating contest of the 2012 election is one of many quirks that set Paul's campaign apart from the more traditional presidential hopefuls.

Paul's schedule is a model of efficiency. Events start on time, and he delivers the same remarks at each one, no matter the location or size of the crowd. He speaks favorably of Iowa's importance in the nominating process but never forcefully asks audience members for their vote.

His venues are typically stark ? no bunting, no music, no booming sound system. Voters sit quietly, as if listening to a university economics lecture.

Paul never strays from his message of limited government, free markets and the importance of the Constitution, even when the moment might call for a different approach ? like when a 10-year-old autistic boy asked Paul on Friday what he might do to help children like him.

"The most valuable resource for children, teenagers, college kids and adults is liberty. If we protect those liberties we will have the maximum amount of progress," Paul said. Later, he assured the boy he did not plan to slash health care for children or the elderly if elected.

Paul has refused to engage rivals like Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, even as they have stepped up their criticisms of his foreign policy views and his lack of legislative accomplishments in Congress. He also rarely criticizes President Barack Obama, insisting that both parties are responsible for excess spending and debt.

He saves his attacks for campaign commercials and interviews. He told Bloomberg News on Friday that he might not be able to support any of his rivals because they embraced the status quo in Washington.

"If ... they don't want to change anything on foreign policy, they don't want to cut anything, they don't want to audit the Fed and find out about monetary policy, they don't want to have actual change in government, that is a problem for me," he said.

Paul travels with a small band of trusted advisers including a son-in-law, Jesse Benton, who doubles as his campaign chairman. Two of Paul's adult granddaughters, Linda and Lisa Paul, have also joined him in Iowa.

Carol Paul has made only limited appearances with her husband, showing up at debates and other major events.
